A Brand (Spanking) New Day
Happy Brand New Day-Day, everyone! Peter Parker’s latest silver screen reinvention is out in cinemas today (in Europe), so I’m wearing my Spidey socks to work, and when the boss falls asleep, I’ll 🕸️ thwip 🕸️ over to the movie theater right away.
But first, it’s my turn to remind you that comic book movies come from comic books, and that a bunch of the ones that could also be adapted into movies someday… are on FOC today!
I know you know what that means because you signed up for this newsletter, so let me present this week’s set of summer bods and good vibes, and two action-packed collections of epic clashes!
Myths, Monsters, and Oh Momma!
100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and then a 10-kilometer run.
Mike Grell’s The Warlord is DC’s classic ’70s sword-and-sorcery series in which an Air Force colonel by the name of Travis Morgan ends up crashing through a literal hole in the planet and isekai-ing into the world of Skartaris, which lies below. There, his earthly uniform is quickly replaced by a skull-chain belt and a Viking helmet as his inner swashbuckling hero emerges. Fans praise the initial 133-issue run of this series for its nonstop berserking action, while haters… probably haven’t actually read it yet.

A Clash of Wondrous Women

Beyond a doubt, my personal favourite series in DC’s Absolute line, which is stellar across the board, is Absolute Wonder Woman by Kelly Thompson. It continues in its third collection. In this one, Diana gets pushed to her Absolute limits as she clashes with Zatanna, Giganta, Cheetah, and others in this universe’s Suicide Squad.
Her unwavering selflessness and confidence against all odds remain intoxicating to witness, and I just cannot get enough of the way the author weaves mythology into the spine of the story. The same goes for Hayden Sherman’s art, which wears its ancient Greek pottery inspiration on its sleeve while retaining all the dynamic fidelity a modern comic book should have. Don’t miss out on this masterpiece in the making…
Deathstroke Takes On Titans
Slade Wilson’s unexpected Broadway debut.
Christopher Priest’s Deathstroke is a painfully underrated series that has all the makings of an all-time great not-a-superhero story. For example: wild plots with high stakes that tackle thought-provoking ethical dilemmas, disorienting scene shifts and time jumps that ultimately click together in perfect harmony, and engrossing action and dialogue, at their best when mixed, as Slade Wilson exchanges blows with the likes of Batman and Superman. There are even copious amounts of family drama, and it’s the best kind: not your own!
