Huge VIZ Shipment, Magical Girls & Some Very Big Books

Let’s begin this one with a very important callout: We got a huge VIZ shipment. And to be fair, Yen Press also showed up with a very nice restock situation.

So yes, this is one of those dangerous weeks where "I’ll just take a quick look" can turn into a full basket surprisingly fast. Some old-but-gold series are back, some newer titles are waiting to be discovered, and honestly… this is exactly the kind of shipment I love browsing through. 🙃

And since we are already talking about new arrivals, there is one title I really want to put a spotlight on first: Magical Girl Dandelion.

_________________________________________________________________________________

What is MAGICAL GIRL DANDELION about?

A blonde girl standing with a smile. Behind her a dark figure with a big grin.
A fiend who slays his own kind. A magical girl who refuses the script. A story where light and shadow are much more tangled than they first appear.

Magical Girl Dandelion follows Tanpopo Ohanami, a seemingly ordinary girl whose quiet life is interrupted when she is offered the chance to become a magical girl. There is just one tiny problem: her best friend, Shade, is a fiend. And in this world, fiends are supposed to be the villains.

That already makes things complicated, but Tanpopo’s relationship with fiends has never been simple. Her parents were killed by one, but she was saved by another, and Shade has protected her ever since. So when she “blooms” into Magical Girl Dandelion and is recruited by Butterfly, the organization managing magical girls, she doesn’t fit neatly into the role everyone expects from her.

And that’s where the series gets really interesting. Magical Girl Dandelion plays with the classic question of what actually makes someone a “good” magical girl. Is it fighting monsters because an organization tells you to? Is it following the rules? Or is it love, care, and the ability to see people clearly, even when everyone else has already decided who the enemy is?

The setup may sound familiar: magical girls, dark companions, secret organizations, morally complicated monsters. But the execution is what makes it work. Tanpopo and Shade’s relationship has that slightly tense but deeply loyal energy I immediately love, and the artwork blends action, emotion, and gorgeous character designs.

QUEEN'S QUALITY

And if you like Magical Girl Dandelion, or magical girls in general, this is also your reminder to check out one of my all-time favourites: Queen’s Quality. Yes, finally, i can talk about this one again!

Queen’s Quality is one of those series that starts with a very simple idea and then quietly becomes so much bigger than expected. At first, it looks like a supernatural shojo story about cleaning, curses, and emotional baggage. Which, to be fair, it is.

But the longer it goes on, the more it turns into a story about trauma, healing, trust, and what it means to protect someone without taking away their freedom. Fumi and Kyutaro’s relationship is really the heart of the series, and I love how it balances tenderness with darker, heavier themes.

It has romance, action, comedy, and just enough emotional damage to make you stare at a wall for a moment after certain chapters. And since the series is coming to an end very soon, this feels like the perfect time to either catch up or finally start it.

The Huge Girl: Witch Hat Atelier Grimoire Edition

I was honestly very relieved to learn that I am not the only person who sometimes has a problem connecting size information to actual physical books.

Because there I was, looking at the price of Witch Hat Atelier: Grimoire Edition and thinking: “Wow. That is quite a lot for such a little book." Why? Because for some reason my brain decided it would be the same size as the French edition.
Turns out: no. She is a huge girl.

It’s actually the same size as the Vagabond editions, which suddenly makes the whole thing make a lot more sense. And honestly, it’s gorgeous. Not really surprising, though: the first volume of Witch Hat Atelier: Grimoire Edition is already sold out. 🥲 But don’t panic. A restock is on the way.

And if you don’t want to miss the next volume, please check out the preorder. Especially because there is also a really nice preorder price on top. 🤭

And since you are already in preorder mode… Here are a few other tips from me for your next preorder session:

Dorohedoro Illustrations - Mud and Sludge:
Q Hayashida created a world full of brutal fights, capricious sorcerers, strange creatures, and fatal absurdity, and Mud and Sludge feels like exactly the kind of art book this series deserves.

Mushishi Collector’s Edition 3:
Who doesn’t love Mushishi? Okay, okay. My friend, apparently. I was so excited when I finally convinced her to read volume 1 (the German single-volume edition) and she just looked at me like: "Nah." So obviously we aren’t friends anymore. Just kidding. Mostly. 😬

But yes, Mushishi is one of my all-time favourites. Quiet, strange, beautiful, melancholic, and somehow always exactly as long as it needs to be. And volume 3 of the Collector’s Edition has my favourite cover so far. Love it.🤩

Wonder Boy Vol. 02:
Wonder Boy is one of those series you might easily overlook, but it’s actually such an interesting book. It doesn’t really follow classic series logic. Instead of one continuous plot, it gives us loosely connected episodes, all held together by one mysterious boy. His name, age, and even his nature seem to shift from story to story. He appears in different times and places.

Not exactly a casual brain-off read. But if you like manga that feels unusual, thoughtful, and a little hard to categorize, this might be one to keep an eye on.
