Dans ce récit d'ouverture, on rencontre Mitchell Slate au plus fort de la Grande Dépression. Malchanceux et sur le chemin du retour vers une famille déçue et désespérée, le voyage en train de Mitchell déraille et se transforme en une aventure macabre et délicieusement sombre au cœur de sa propre âme fragile.
