Fais la connaissance d’Asterios Polyp : architecte et enseignant d’âge mûr au succès modeste, esthète et séducteur, dont la vie bascule complètement lorsque son appartement new-yorkais part en fumée. Dans un état de stupeur obstinée, il quitte la ville pour s’installer dans une petite bourgade du cœur de l’Amérique. Mais que signifie vraiment cette « fuite » ? Au fil du récit, entre présent et passé, on commence à comprendre ce personnage déroutant mais fascinant, et comment il en est arrivé là. Et aussi ce qu’il n’est pas devenu. On rencontre aussi Hana : une artiste japonaise-américaine de première génération, douce et brillante, avec qui il avait construit une vie heureuse. Mais maintenant, elle a disparu.
