In the first of two volumes in Fantagraphics' Crepax series devoted to the artist's comics adaptations of the erotic literary canon, Valentina takes on Georges Bataille's The Story of an Eye, and then we follow Arsan's Emmanuelle on her sensual journey. "The Story of a Story" (1981) stars Milanese photographer Valentina. Finding herself home alone, she cheekily decides to fantasize about Georges Bataille's infamous novella The Story of an Eye - with a twist: she's playing all the roles! In the stories "Emmanuelle" (1978) and "Emmanuelle: The Anti-Virgin" (1990), Crepax follows the titular heroine on her sensual journey as the polyamorous wife of a French diplomat in Thailand. While the character is best known as the star of a series of pornographic movies, most notably the 1974 film starring Sylvia Kristel, she originated in a banned 1959 novel by Marayat Rollet-Andriane (pen name Emmanuelle Arsan), a Thai French woman. Emmanuelle has a sexual encounter on a plane, plays a steamy game of squash with
a countess, falls for a woman named Bee, and has an intense experience at a temple, among the many other transgressive exploits Crepax details from the novel. And, in an innovation of Crepax's own - she crosses paths with King Kong! This volume is the first of two featuring comics adaptations from the literary erotica canon along with supplemental and contextual material. And, as is observed in the Crepax Archives, "[The cartoonist,] covered by the authority of classics, ventures into territories of eroticism that up to now he had only dared to touch."
Dans le premier de deux volumes de la série Crepax chez Fantagraphics consacrés aux adaptations en BD par l’artiste des classiques de la littérature érotique, Valentina s’attaque à The Story of an Eye de Georges Bataille, puis on suit Emmanuelle d’Arsan dans son voyage sensuel. « The Story of a Story » (1981) met en scène la photographe milanaise Valentina. Se retrouvant seule chez elle, elle décide malicieusement de fantasmer sur la célèbre novella scandaleuse de Georges Bataille, The Story of an Eye — avec un twist : elle y joue tous les rôles ! Dans les récits « Emmanuelle » (1978) et « Emmanuelle: The Anti-Virgin » (1990), Crepax suit l’héroïne éponyme dans son voyage sensuel en tant qu’épouse polyamoureuse d’un diplomate français en Thaïlande. Si le personnage est surtout connu comme la star d’une série de films pornographiques, notamment le film de 1974 avec Sylvia Kristel, il est apparu à l’origine dans un roman interdit de 1959 signé Marayat Rollet-Andriane (sous le nom de plume Emmanuelle Arsan), une femme thaïe-française. Emmanuelle a une rencontre sexuelle dans un avion, joue une partie de squash torride avec
une comtesse, s’éprend d’une femme nommée Bee et vit une expérience intense dans un temple, parmi les nombreux exploits transgressifs que Crepax reprend du roman. Et, dans une invention propre à Crepax, elle croise même la route de King Kong ! Ce volume est le premier de deux à proposer des adaptations en BD issues du canon de la littérature érotique, accompagnées de contenus complémentaires et de contextualisation. Et, comme on l’observe dans les Crepax Archives, « [Le dessinateur,] couvert par l’autorité des classiques, s’aventure sur des territoires d’érotisme qu’il n’avait jusque-là osé qu’effleurer. »
