Ses deux compagnons se dirigèrent vers le camion, mais lui s’arrêta. « Kino », dit-il d’un ton d’un sérieux mortel. « Qu’est-ce qu’il y a ? » « T’as pas demandé ce qu’il y a à l’arrière du camion. Pourquoi ? » « Pourquoi, qu’est-ce qu’il y a dedans ? » répondit Kino aussitôt. L’homme se tut un instant, puis sourit brusquement. « Notre péché. » Dans une terre désolée recouverte de neige, Kino et Hermes trouvent trois hommes en pleine nature, mourant de faim. Bien qu’il ne les connaisse pas — ni leurs intentions — Kino décide de chasser des lapins et de cuisiner pour les remettre sur pied. Même si ces hommes sont sincèrement reconnaissants pour cette bonté, ce que Kino ignore pourrait bien finir par se retourner contre lui...
