Karina n’a jamais demandé à devenir une magical girl ! En fait, à peine quelques heures se sont écoulées depuis la mort soudaine de sa chère grand-mère quand un garçon l’aborde dans la rue et lui demande de se transformer. Mais comment une ado sarcastique issue d’un milieu ouvrier peut-elle gérer son deuil, ses études, son job de serveuse et le fait de combattre la mort elle-même ? Ce matin encore, Karina était assise à la table du petit-déjeuner à nettoyer la soupe miso que sa grand-mère avait renversée par terre. Maintenant, on la fait sortir de cours pour aller à l’hôpital voir le corps de sa grand-mère... avec un morceau d’algue encore collé à son uniforme. Elle trouve malgré tout le temps d’aller à son travail payé à l’heure dans un restaurant familial, mais sur le chemin du retour, elle aperçoit une créature scintillante ressemblant à un éléphant flotter dans le ciel... Et un adolescent surgit pour la pousser hors de portée de son attaque ! La mort rôde dans la ville de Karina sous une forme que seule elle peut voir, et ce garçon lui laisse deux choix : mourir ou se transformer et se battre ! Elle a à peine le temps de comprendre ce qu’il raconte, mais ses vêtements changent bel et bien, et le bâton qu’elle se retrouve à tenir est assez lourd pour infliger de sérieux dégâts... Mais reste-t-il de la place dans la vie de Karina pour venger sa grand-mère et combattre des monstres magiques alors qu’elle est déjà au bout du rouleau ?
