When I discovered My Kitten is a Picky Eater, it immediately landed on the list of titles I wanted to take a closer look at. But I hesitated for a while, since I’d already read quite a few series in this direction over the past years. In the end, though, I just had to check it out.

What started as a seemingly light-hearted slice-of-life story quickly turned out to be a deeply emotional and touching manga. In Japan, the series by mangaka Migiri Miki has been running since April 2020 under the title “Neko ni wa Neko no Neko Gohan” in Manga Mee. There are already 13 volumes published in Japan.

The English version is released by Seven Seas.

So, how was My Kitten is a Picky Eater Vol?

The protagonist Mano Taiyo finds a half-frozen, almost starving kitten in the snow on a cold winter day. Although he has no experience with pets, he takes the cat home and decides to nurse it back to health. But it quickly becomes clear that Yuki — his name for the kitten — is extremely distrustful of food. A traumatic experience from his past left its mark, making him barely willing to eat even in a life-threatening state. Mano desperately seeks help from a vet and does everything he can to win the cat’s trust.

What first sounds like a simple story about a picky eater develops into a touching tale of trust, patience, and dedication. One of the biggest strengths of this manga is the development of its main characters. Mano grows into his role as a cat owner —transforming from someone who barely takes care of himself into a man willing to do anything for his new family member. He starts cooking, something he’s never done before, experiments with recipes, and slowly turns his home into a paradise for Yuki. Alongside him are supportive side characters like his best friend Tetsu, who owns a dog and is always there to help, and Sahara, an employee at a cat café, who gives Mano helpful advice but also initially questions whether he’s really the right person for Yuki.

What makes this manga special is its emotional depth. Alongside the many adorable moments between Mano and Yuki, there are also profound and thoughtful reflections. The story addresses responsibility toward animals, the challenges of pet ownership, and the importance of patience and perseverance. An especially interesting aspect is the manga’s critical look at pet nutrition. It’s not just about Yuki being picky — it raises broader questions about what healthy cat food really is.

The art style is fairly simple but fits the mood of the manga perfectly. The characters are expressive, and both the funny and the sad moments are conveyed impressively.

Seven Seas publishes the manga in paperback format. There are no color pages in the first volume.

Is My Kitten is a Picky Eater worth reading?

My Kitten is a Picky Eater is a beautiful, emotional story about the bond between humans and animals, the challenges of living together, and the little moments that make life so special. If you love slice-of-life manga, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth here. It’s a gentle, thoughtful, and incredibly sweet manga that might appeal not only to cat lovers but to anyone who appreciates stories with heart.
