So, when an opportunity to reunite with her old scientist friend Jinare for research on the planet Poilant crops up, Chapel is excited to finally do what Starfleet does best: explore strange new worlds. However, when the Enterprise arrives in Poilant’s space, the crew cannot get into contact with Jinare or any of her researchers. Chapel, Una, Spock, La’An, and Scotty beam down, and they are greeted by…nothing…no one…and no signs of what caused their disappearance, only a robot named D6 who urges them to descend into the planet’s depths in search of his friends. But there’s more than scientists lurking in the watery abyss. Ancient life-forms and behemoths await—and they might mean more adventure than even Chapel can handle.

Après mission sans histoire sur mission sans histoire, Christine Chapel meurt d’envie de vivre une vraie aventure. Alors, quand l’occasion se présente de retrouver son ancienne amie scientifique Jinare pour des recherches sur la planète Poilant, Chapel est ravie de pouvoir enfin faire ce que Starfleet fait de mieux : explorer d’étranges nouveaux mondes. Pourtant, lorsque l’Enterprise arrive dans l’espace de Poilant, l’équipage est incapable d’entrer en contact avec Jinare ou l’un de ses chercheurs. Chapel, Una, Spock, La’An et Scotty se téléportent à la surface et sont accueillis par… rien… personne… aucun indice sur la cause de leur disparition, seulement un robot nommé D6 qui les pousse à s’enfoncer dans les profondeurs de la planète à la recherche de ses amis. Mais il n’y a pas que des scientifiques qui rôdent dans cet abîme aquatique. Des formes de vie antiques et des colosses les y attendent — et cela pourrait représenter plus d’aventure que même Chapel ne peut en supporter.
