3 Highlights from this Week's FOC

WHAT'S FOC'ING THIS WEEK?

Hello there, dear readers!

Just like the big comic publishers will create these world-shattering, colossal events – so has team Walt gone through one this weekend. From all the pictures and chats I’ve witnessed: it was quite a memorable one! (And I’m still crying myself to sleep over horrendous German trains which have spoiled my plans and didn’t let me participate like a D-list character that I am).

But now I find myself in the position of the writers who come after these events, having to bring you the very next FOC newsletter and try to tickle your interest some more. So, let’s pretend like we’re a big comic publisher and the events like Walt’s 5Y and the Batman Day didn’t have any consequence to your budgets!

Therefore, let me welcome you to Prelude to the Road to Fallout of W5Y Aftermath Newsletter Omnibus (Here’s what I think you should grab this week)!

Avengers: No Surrender/No Road Home Omnibus

A little personal backstory for this book: back before I was able to burn through my monthly budget on omnis, I was only able to aim for smaller books due to my country not being a part of the EU. One of the books that I loved pouring through (and one of the rare hardcovers that came with me to Germany) was the original Avengers: No Surrender hardcover.

I just love this story. It was at the time in Avengers where there were almost as many teams as Bendis had years prior: Mark Waid was on Avengers, Jim Zub was killing it on the Uncanny Avengers and Al Ewing was playing a 5-dimensional game of chess over at U.S.Avengers. All these diverse teams converged in one story, which threatened to retcon the history of avengers, as well as work to position pieces for the next chapter – it was insane reading it issue to issue, as well as collected.

And then, the follow-up happened with Avengers: No Road Home – a story that didn’t feature the same characters though the same creatives were involved – and that went even more meta and brought Conan into the Marvel universe… and then it was never collected in an oversized format. I hoped, and prayed, and cast spells and talked to deities, but Marvel was not to relent…

Which is why when I saw this omni announced, I was overjoyed. While the stories here are separate (the Quicksilver mini spinning off from something that happens in the first story), they are a fantastic read, with visuals that will blow your mind brought to you by creatives like Pepe Larraz, Kim Jacinto, Paco Medina, and many more! It’s weird, cosmic-y, with bickering teammates who are fighting powers much stronger than they are. It’s everything you want from an Avengers book, and it’s a fun romp through and through!

The Graveyard Club

As we’re nearing the spooooky month, it’s time to start looking into some spooooky books! The Graveyard Club might be just the book you want to pick up this year. If you were ever a fun of Goosebumps or Fear Street when you were a younger (or even now – I won’t judge), you will rejoice learning that R. L. Stine wrote the story of the sleepy town of Graves End.

It’s exactly what you would picture from a book named “The Graveyard Club” written by Stine – a horror coming of age story in the vein of The Breakfast Club – only surrounded by graveyards. Just from the opening sentence: “When we were kids, we played hide ‘n’ seek in the graveyard every day,” you know what you’re in for. It’s a fun, spooky story with some twists and turns that will leave you guessing. The downside might be that it’s, again, what you expect from an R. L. Stine story – you will not see (too much) gore or blood here if that’s what you’re looking for. The story is, like many of his works, a “light horror” one – so you can also give it to your teens who are dealing with the horrors of high school themselves.

The standout for me, however, was the art – Carola Borelli’s illustrations realize each character in great detail – from their voice to their attitude, and Francesco Segala’s colors (with the assistance by Gloria Martinelli) push this further, giving each scene the intensity and mood perfect for Halloween!

Judge Dredd by Carlos Ezquerra Apex Edition

Hopping over the pond to 2000 AD, a new Apex Edition is going to grace our shelves in just a few months. For the uninitiated, 2000 AD’s Apex Editions are what you would call the Artist’s Editions – oversized, hardcover, beautiful deluxe art books you can pore over and enjoy for days on end.

Carlos Ezquerra was called “El Maestro” for a reason – the man co-created as well as designed Judge Dredd (along with John Wagner, the writer). Dredd went on to become one of the most iconic characters in comics, and this book offers us the look into his original artwork in its true size – before resizing it down to fit a page of your monthly publications.

2000 AD has released a couple of Apex Editions thus far - Kev O’Neill, Mick McMahon, Steve Dillon, Arthur Ranson – and Mr. Ezquerra’s work absolutely deserves to be on this list as well. The book will collect seven fully-colored stories from the best era of Dredd (1980s), as well as his earlier work with the character. This will be a great treat for any Judge Dredd fan (and really anyone who enjoys masterful art) – and its release at the late November could also make it a great Christmas gift. (My gods, have I already started thinking about Christmas?)
