Big Book News - April 2025

Hello there and welcome to another instalment of the newsletter that highlights the comic books that are big enough to become shelves themselves! I mean, not that one should do that, but, let's be honest, most of you have, at some point, done that, and quite possibly still today, against better judgment... do that.

Big Book Deals are usually reserved for the biggest names in comics, and who might be bigger than even Spider-Man? Why, the ULTIMATE Spider-Man, of course! His incredibly and rightfully popular collection officially and ultimately concludes with this fifth volume.

DC’s cynical and surly bounty hunter Jonah Hex may present as an unlikeable person, what with his scarred visage and his rather rough demeanor, but those who read his weird western tales tend to grow to like him pretty quickly. We certainly did! A BIG, X-CITING BOOK

There are just SO many X-Men books up for pre-ordering now, it’s… uncanny. There’s the Brian Michael Bendis run, Gerry Duggan’s run, Fall of the House of X, Return of Wolverine, and we recently added one that we just feel everyone should cross off their list. 

You see, Marvel usually doesn’t reprint oversized hardcovers, but Jonathan Hickman and Pepe Larraz’s House Of X/Powers Of X HC isn’t exactly your usual book. It is, frankly, the perfect stand-alone X-Men tale, thanking its timeless appeal to its overwhelmingly epic scope, condensed into a very accessible length. And yet, it’s also the start of a far longer journey for those allured by Krakoa’s promise. It’s one of the most exciting books of the last decade, launching a new era for the X-Men, one that’s now dearly missed after its portals closed for good last year. A BIG, X-TRATERRESTRIAL BOOK

Hickman and Larraz may have started the incredible Krakoa Saga, but they famously never got to finish it. For better or worse, other creators got to play in their caringly crafted sandbox before it was finally closed, and while opinions inevitably differ on the mixed successes along the way, Al Ewing’s contributions were consistently and convincingly reaping the highest praise.

Largely taking place on the S.W.O.R.D. space base, as well as on the famous Red planet, this collection features a proper space opera of the grandest scale. It’s for sure going to give you an all-new appreciation for Storm, Sunspot, Magneto and more, as if you didn’t have enough reasons to love them already.

DOOM Patrol has no shortage of great runs, and Keith Giffen’s is no exception. The late author’s comedian qualities proved a wonderful fit for this zany set of misfits, as was his supernatural ability to make every single character an immediately captivating one, no matter if they were your oldest favourites or just introduced two pages ago. Giffen’s run is lauded as probably the most character-driven take on the team, getting the absolute most out of an incredible supporting cast, who will all find a way into your heart and stay there, forever.
