Superheroes, but more mature and more grounded, that’s what Valiant Comics has always been about. Since the early '90s, Valiant has built one of the most underrated, interconnected comic universes out there, packed with rich characters, tight storytelling, and some truly original ideas.
I’ll be honest: I have a very soft spot for Valiant, especially the original 90s universe created by Jim Shooter and the likes of Barry Windsor-Smith, Bob Layton and David Lapham. But even later iterations, and I will especially highlight the relaunch in 2012, always tried to do something unique and are worth checking out. They’ve delivered some of the best superhero (and antihero) comics outside of Marvel and DC. If you’ve never dived into this universe, you’re in for a treat.
A Quick Overview
The original 90s Era (aka "The Shooterverse") 1991-1994
Founded in 1989 by Jim Shooter, Valiant exploded in popularity with characters like Bloodshot, X-O Manowar, Harbinger and Shadowman and integrated Gold Key legends Solar, Magnus Robot Fighter and Turok into a new continuity. It was one of the few publishers to really challenge the Big Two—until the mid-90s comic crash hit hard.
The Acclaim Era 1994-2004
While not super-popular with Valiant die-hards, this iteration had its moments, though it is mostly remembered for the video games based on Valiant properties rather than the reading material (one notable exception being the legendary Quantum & Woody).
The Modern Revival (aka "The Dineshverse") 2012-2024
Led by entrepreneur (and Valiant fan!) Dinesh Shamdasani Valiant came back strong, relaunching its universe with critically acclaimed, tightly plotted comics that felt fresh but respected the past. Books like Harbinger, Bloodshot, and The Valiant got new life through creators like Matt Kindt, Joshua Dysart and Jeff Lemire. And new, original series like Divinity, Britannia and Faith kept pushing the boundaries of superhero storytelling.
Where It Stands Now (2025)
Under Alien Books the Valiant universe has found a new home and dedication to great storytelling. After wrapping the previous iteration, they have relaunched a new take on old classics under "VALIANT BEYOND".
