I couldn’t help but wonder: how far will Walt let us push this newsletter – along with you, dear readers? Some comic jokes here, some very outdated references there, and suddenly, it’s back to the editing desk. It hasn’t happened yet, but will we finally be told to knock it off with this one?
And as November sweeps in with its weather moodier than Batman perched on a gargoyle, I found myself curled up with a cup of hot chocolate and a very good omnibus in my lap. I realized: there might be nothing more perfect than that.

Naturally, just as I settled in for hibernation through these winter months, FOC came knocking again. It’s time to see what future readings we’ll commit to – after all, new comics are a lot like a new pair of shoes: exciting, tempting, and sometimes impossible to resist! Here are my picks for this week.
Daken: Dark Wolverine Omnibus
Sons stepping out of their father’s shadows has been a popular theme in literature. Akihiro has a tough task – his father’s shadow is long, bloody and impossible to ignore. Luckily, he has enough edge and charm to grab the Wolverine mantle and make it his own.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Marvel’s Dark Reign era – the chaos, the moral grayness, the way the lines between heroes and villains blur. Every issue leaves you wondering what lines are left to cross. Norman Osborn leading the Avengers? You know that only terrific trouble will come out of that!
Akihiro debuted just before this era began and finds himself with an impossible choice: being a hero is hard, being a villain is fun… so he decides to do both.
(He did more than just the two, if you ask Marjorie Liu.)
The book is a direct follow up to Wolverine by Mark Millar (which collects the short stint of issues #66-72) and Wolverine by Jason Aaron (which collets the other issues from #62 to #74). (If we want to be technical, Marvel doesn’t count Dark Wolverine in the legacy numbers, but this is the reason why the omni starts with Dark Wolverine #75-90).
Written by Daniel Way and Marjorie Liu, you know this book will knock your socks off. Giuseppe Camuncoli and Stephen Segovia tackle the art which is dramatic, dynamic and dastardly delicious.

Earth 2: The New 52 Omnibus Vol. 1
Post-Crisis DC had only one world to work with. But when New 52 hit, it opened the door to endless story possibilities. If you love Justice Society of America, this book is for you.
Earth 2 is a direct homage to pre-Crisis Earth-Two, but it wears a sleek, modern outfit. With the core Trinity missing, it is up to new heroes to rise – Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Kendra Saunders – completely new yet very familiar faces!
This book collects the best of this mirror world, guided by James Robinson and Tom Taylor. Across multiple series, they show the fall of the “old” and rise of the “new” in very unexpected ways.
It’s bold, it’s fresh and full of sci-fi action. The series quickly proved to be a New 52 favorite, and you can see why for yourself.

Invincible Omnibus HC Vol 01
Ah, Invincible. The best superhero comic in the universe.
Somewhere between teenage melodrama and space war opera, there is a place for Mark Grayson and the family he is creating. His story has wormed his way into my heart, and it will never leave.
Even before the animated show hit Prime, my compendiums were creased and well-read. And now, like a ray of sunlight through this cloudy November, the omnibus graces us on FOC. You know I need this thing on my shelf.
For those who somehow still don’t know what Invincible is, this is Robert Kirkman’s superhero story –started with Cory Walker and launched Ryan Ottley to stardom. Without too much away, it follows a teenager Mark Grayson on his journey to adulthood, while taking some huge jumps in scale.
It’s brutal, shocking and bloody, but the characters you will meet are unforgettable. Plus, the omni includes that one extra issue of Mark’s crossover with Spidey. How could I ever say no to this book?

For those who can’t get enough
Just when you think your pull list is full, a few cheeky little gems appear and threaten my wallet. While these omnis steal the show, there are some accessory books that are a must this season too.
Saga Deluxe Edition HC Vol 04 – after the prolonged hiatus, the saga of little Hazel continues as she keeps growing, getting into trouble and stealing hearts. This one gives us a respite from the shocking end of issue #54, while pushing the story in a brave new direction.
Green Lantern: The Sinestro Corps War Compendium TP – if you are like me unsure about investing in Johns’ Green Lantern saga in the omni format, compendiums mix all Lantern titles of the era (Tomasi’s Green Lantern Corps included). This will be the way I dive into the saga instead of omni-surfing.
Krypto: The Last Dog Of Krypton TP – I wrote about this one during our Superman article this summer, and now we have it collected! North is a great writer and Norton and Herring elevate everything to a completely new level. Get this book because it will melt your heart and make you cry.
Batgirl Vol. 2: Bloodlines TP – Ok, this one is just for me. I love Cassie Cane. I want this title to keep going. There’s action, and family drama and murder and mystery – and Cassie written well. Love it.
