3 Highlights from this Week's FOC
WHAT SHOULD YOU NOT MISS THIS WEEK?
Thunderbolts: Dark Reign Omnibus
Let’s be honest: Marvel feels a bit lost right now. The comics line just doesn’t seem to have a clear direction, and there aren’t any bold new voices or diverse creators coming into the mix. They’re ending the popular Ultimate line, and their big new event “Age of Revelation” feels like just another throwback to the ‘90s, aimed mostly at longtime fans. Exciting times… So, it’s no surprise that DC on the other hand is gaining much more traction gathering the industry’s biggest talents and letting them loose on whatever property they desire.
That’s exactly why the Thunderbolts Omnibus is such a breath of fresh air. It’s a reminder of when Marvel put real creative talent front and center, when people like Andy Diggle and Mike Deodato Jr. were making comics that actually felt new and relevant. Back then, the “House of Ideas” lived up to its name, taking risks and responding to what was happening in the world, not just repeating what worked in the past. This Thunderbolts Omnibus just shows what real ambition used to look like at Marvel.
Even the Civil War era covered in this Omnibus was one of Marvel’s boldest. There was energy and momentum, and Marvel wasn’t afraid to try new things, even if not every idea was a hit. And when you throw Norman Osborn, Venom, Bullseye, Songbird, Moonstone, and Penance (a post–Civil War, deeply traumatized Speedball) onto one team, you’ve definitely got something going for you. It’s a lineup that’s as fun as it is dysfunctional!

So, if you’re looking for a reminder of what Marvel can be when it actually takes real chances, look no further than the Thunderbolts Omnibus. Even our co-worker and fellow newsletter writer Simone had to admit, after reading these stories, that it not only rules — it might very well be a masterpiece. High praise from our resident Marvel skeptic!

Incredible Hulk: Return Of The Monster Omnibus
I’ve always been fascinated by the Hulk. Most people know him for his unstoppable rage and iconic “Hulk smash!” moments, but there’s so much more beneath the surface. I’ll never forget seeing Ang Lee’s Hulk (very underrated!) as a kid; for the first time, I really understood the tragedy at the heart of the character. Bruce Banner isn’t just a force of destruction, he’s a man defined by pain, struggling with trauma that’s every bit as powerful as his alter ego.

That’s exactly why the upcoming Bruce Jones Hulk Omnibus has me genuinely excited. This run dives deep into the psychology of Bruce Banner, drawing inspiration from the intense, character-driven storytelling of the 1970s TV series, but without falling back on nostalgia. Instead, Jones crafts a thriller with Banner on the run and haunted by mysterious enemies. What sets this era apart is how grounded and human the story feels. This Omnibus brings together the entire Bruce Jones run, a bold, intimate take on the Hulk that pushed the character into darker territory and stands as one of the most compelling reinterpretations of the 2000s. If you’re looking for a Hulk story where the horror and humanity pack as much punch as the action, this is the one to read.

The Blood Brothers Mother
I love Westerns. And although they may no longer dominate the box office or bestseller lists, their spirit is alive and well, and The Blood Brothers Mother by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso is proof. The creative team behind 100 Bullets brings all their noir sensibility and storytelling grit to this new take on the genre. It’s their first big reunion since Moonshine, and they waste no time getting their hands dirty with the themes that make Westerns timeless: family, vengeance, survival, and those moral grey zones that pull you in whether you want them to or not.
What sets this book apart is how it honors classic Western roots while pushing the genre forward. The journey of the three siblings across a brutal Texas frontier is tense, raw, and deeply emotional, all brought to life through Risso’s incredible visuals.

The Blood Brothers Mother feels like a genuine event, the kind of book that makes you remember why the Western has never truly gone away. The hardcover collects the entire four-issue run, making it the perfect addition to any collection. So, whether you’re an Azzarello/Risso die-hard, a DSTLRY devotee, or just craving a gripping Western done right, don’t let this one pass you by.
