Commentary by Walt

A new month, and once again, things are going absolutely crazy. Our best singles month of all time. Again.

Absolute Batman is cleaning house, mercilessly, with the current issue #22 and then #23 as a pre-order. That's our Jorge Corona exclusive cover, and I'm not surprised by HOW hard that one hit. Because, as we have established in the ad copy: it's the ABSOLUTE PUNCH.

Absolute Catwoman #2 is closer on its heels than I expected, followed really closely by Absolute Green Arrow #3.

Then comes a title nobody expected to have this kind of staying power and, honestly, even room to grow: Batman. It's rightfully the baseline for our sales, because every month the book maintains a very high level and is actually building on it little by little.

At #6, Absolute Catwoman #1 is of course due to our event with Belén Ortega, who came to our warehouse for a signing, was wonderful, and helped us sell through another serious amount of copies.

At #7, Terminal by Robert Kirkman. A Kirkman success shouldn't exactly come as a surprise, but the pre-orders were solid rather than spectacular. I have the feeling this title only really exploded after release. Really fantastic sales numbers. But also: a blind bag release. So I'm curious to see how well it holds.

Then we have Absolute Wonder Woman and Daredevil, both Top 10 mainstays.

And then, at #10, a new Marvel #1. What could it possibly be? Nudies! There's a long tradition here, of course. The 90s invented it. And we all know that only the very best things were invented in the 90s.

Speaking of nice asses: Nightwing #140 landed where it did thanks entirely to a Swimsuit Special variant, of which I ordered an insane amount. Of course we sold out.
Titan Comics focuses on the fairer-sex version of curvy and proves the same thing, with Gun Honey: Double Down #2 taking a very respectable position for an indie book. The thesis: naughty always sells. It's like... MAGIC!

Another publisher making a guest appearance in the Top 50 is Ignition Press. But here we need to pat ourselves on the back a little bit, because The Patron by Christian Ward and John J. Pearson is a homegrown success. If we had a physical store, you'd call it handselling. We did everything we could to let our customers know about this fantastic series. And they listened!

Now looking at last month’s overall singles shares, the publishers stayed pretty much in place: while DC and Marvel remain relatively stable at around 50% and 24% respectively, it was the indie publishers outside of Image that made a significant jump this month, from 12.1% to 15.7% of our total sales. Pretty cool! Proves we're not the total mainstream sell-outs you'd think we are.

August already had a very strong start, I am really curious where the market will take us. And then Legion launches... and Marvel will strike back with Midnight in October ... and then there's this new Avengers series by this... Zdarsky ... person. I've heard some good things about him. Bad things, too, but mostly good ones. He might actually have a modest future in this industry if he sticks with it.

Cheers,

Walt
