Hello there and welcome

to another installment of the newsletter about books that are big on the outside AND the inside! Not unlike The Doctor’s iconic TARDIS, they’ll take you from one point in time to another, and even to entirely different universes. So join me, my reading companions, and let me take you on an unforgettable journey past all the biggest books of today, as well as the distant tomorrow!

But first, a tiny apology. Last month, I left you on an exciting giveaway of two BIG Fantastic Four books (winners, get ready!), but also on a mysterious teaser of this newsletter seemingly evolving. Today, I make good on… only the first of those promises. (Sorry, sorry, sorry.)

But then we realized it wasn't a very good idea.

As you hopefully heard by now, going forward, ALL Big Book pre-orders are Big Book DEALS with all the astonishingly low prices that this entails. We thought about renaming and reframing the newsletter accordingly, hence the tease, but along the month we concluded that the new name would have limited the newsletter unnecessarily.

So, in Pokémon terms, we mashed the B button and the evolution was cancelled! This will remain the cute, adorable little newsletter you first met in the tall grass on Route 1.

AND NOW, before we announce the winners of the giveaway, let's take a look at the hottest, most FIRE books that landed on our shelves this month!

As a radioactive Spider-Fan who’s still high off of the latest Ultimate & Amazing Spider-Man singles (Joe Kelly and Jonathan Hickman both have that Spider-Mojo!), I just can’t resist kicking things off with the double Spider-omni-whammy of Symbiote Spider-Man by Peter David, and Spider-Man: Gang War. The first one collects various previously untold black suit stories taking place during the good old days, though Peter David’s very own technodystopian future Spider-Man, Miguel O’Hara, also gets to symbiotically suit up. Greg Land provides the art, which is, as always, very inspired. (Just don’t look too much into what he’s often inspired by. 🫣)

The second big Spidey book of the month brings all the series involved in the 2023/2024 Gang War event together. In this spectacle, all the major New York crime syndicates decide it’s an excellent day to settle some scores the only way they know how, and no fewer than three Spider-people, along with a bunch of other street level Marvel heroes, divide their attention to prevent the whole city from collapsing in the aftermath.

Both Spider-Omnis are out NOW, so webswing by the store today!

You have probably heard of the legendary author Tom King, and you have probably also heard of the legendary crime-fighter Batman, but have you read the run that brought these legends together? It was the best of times, it was the worst of times (for Batman), and boy did it look incredible. David Finch’s artwork is all the right kinds of dark, gruff and moody for a heartbreaking, gut punching story such as this, making it one of those books that you’ll keep browsing through forevermore.

If Spider-Man gets a double whammy of releases, Batman must too, for he is Batman! Thus, the Batman: Detective Comics by Mariko Tamaki Omnibus swung onto shelves with a batclaw to keep the universes perfectly balanced. This underrated run by the Eisner Award winning writer brought Bruce back to the forefront and Batman back to the streets, and came with the best take on Huntress so far. Moreover, the powerful, razorsharp pencils by Dan Mora made Bruce look at the top of his game in both of his guises.

Do your own detective work and deduct that you should really read these books!

If you already got these earlier, well... WEREN’T YOU LUCKY! But for all of us who didn’t, DC kindly reprinted the Wonder Woman by Phil Jimenez omnibus, which is a great book to read after George Perez’s run.

And Marvel reprinted their grandest heavy metal space opera extravaganza omnibus, Annihilation: Conquest, the second chapter of the Marvel Cosmic Saga.

Who knows how long supplies last this time, so be sure to get them while you can!

THE DISTANT FUTURE

Look, with so many awesome books out and available now, all at once, how could any monthly budget hold up! Wallets empty a lot faster than they fill, so to help plan ahead, let’s have a look at what’s coming out in the more distant future. Here are a few books coming out in the year 2026 that you might already want to put on your radar.

PS: These books aren't actually even available to pre-order yet, so for now: mark your calendars and keep an eye on the site. You'll find all the omnis that CAN already be pre-ordered, here

Big Books Preos

X-Men: Age Of Krakoa - Dawn Of X Omnibus Vol. 2

Following Vol. 1 (which is still available here), this potpourri of series set on Krakoa will take the mutant island’s story all the way up to the pivotal X of Swords event. It’s full of the era’s best and it includes my all-time favourite tie-in miniseries in the Marvel universe, Empyre: X-Men #1-4, in which Magik and Explodey Boy steal the show… and my heart. I can’t wait to read it for the tenth time, but finally in oversized format, in March!

BLACK WIDOW & CAPTAIN AMERICA BY WAID & SAMNEE OMNIBUS HC

Two separate stories by the same creator duo, mashed together in one big book, because “why not?” Similarly to their Daredevil run, their Captain America is a brighter and more joyful take on the character that you’ll breeze through with a smile on your face, and Black Widow is the most action-packed, cinematic rollercoaster ride you could ever wish for. Admittedly, it’s a little strange that the cover selection puts either Cap or Nat front and center, with no option showing both, but it will look stunning on your shelves in either section, come March.

UNCANNY X-MEN BY KIERON GILLEN OMNIBUS HC

I'll gladly take any opportinity to gush about Kieron Gillen, telling you he wields one of the finest and sharpest comic book pens in the superhero business today, and that his name is a seal of quality on any cover it's printed on. Over a decade before he wrapped up the Krakoa saga, he already shepherded the X-Men in a run of his very own. We can all enrich our omnibus collections when the ultimate collection of that adventure launches next April.

ANIMAL MAN BY TOM VEITCH & STEVE DILLON OMNIBUS HC

Why stick to one animal, like those chumps Spider-Man and Batman, when you could take on the power of any beast in range? Buddy Baker gets to do exactly that, though his mystical powers are mired in mystery, and don’t always work as advertised, which leads him into a wild range of trouble. Tom Veitch & Steve Dillon take one of the most interesting superheroes in DC’s catalogue on a wild journey of self-discovery, in this omnibus that’s out in April.

Now, I’m seriously running out of space and time, and I didn’t even get to rave about THE SWAMP THING BY RAM. V. & MIKE PERKINS OMNIBUS also coming out next year! 😱 And so many others! Well, there's always next month, but first...

WHAT TIME WAS IT AGAIN?

Celebrating Fantastic Four: First Steps releasing in cinemas (its soundtrack is STILL stuck in my head), last month’s newsletter ended with a write-in giveaway for two fantastic Fantastic Four books. We asked “What time is it?” and you answered resoundingly...

IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME!

You bet it is!! Though we also very much enjoyed the range of other answers we received, such as:

  • It's giveaway time! (It sure is!)
  • It's 10:32 in the morning, Johnny. (I’m sure it was!)
  • Milady, 'tis the clobbering hour. (Indeed.)
  • It’s time… to buy another bookcase! (That’s the spirit!)
  • And...
THIS should have been the pay-off in the movie!

We can’t really argue against any of those answers, so rest assured that if you wrote in, you were included in the raffle. That said, our big CONGRATULATIONS go out to...

Joachim! You win the Fantastic Four by Waid & Wieringo omnibus!

Tivadar! The Fantastic Four by Millar & Hitch omnibus is yours!

We'll get in touch!

And an equally big THANK YOU to all you cool comic book fans who wrote in. It's always such a joy to organize these, and I'm sure we'll run more of them in the future. Until then, whether you won today or not, come geek out about comics with us over on the Walt's Comic Shop Community Discord server!

OMNI'S ARE FOREVER!

SHOP HAPPINESS

See you,

Jelle
