Celebrated and beloved at Walt's Comic Shop, Gwendolyn Willow Wilson is an Eisner and Harvey nominated writer. Some writers feel like they just get what makes comics great, and G. Willow Wilson is one of them. Whether she’s writing superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy, or straight-up weird fiction, her stories are always smart, well-crafted, and full of real heart.
She’s not flashy. She’s not about big, earth-shattering events. But if you want character-driven storytelling with sharp dialogue and meaningful themes, you’re in good hands here.
Essential G. Willow Wilson Reads
- Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) (with Adrian Alphona & Others) – This one needs no introduction. Kamala Khan is one of the best new superheroes of the last 20 years, and Wilson made her instantly relatable, funny, and full of heart. If you haven’t read it yet, now’s the time. Also: Team Walt's Gloriana first introduction to comics!
- The Invisible Kingdom (with Christian Ward) – Eisner-winning sci-fi that mixes corporate dystopia, deep philosophy, and a touch of Star Wars energy. Plus, Christian Ward’s art is ridiculous (as in: great).
- Poison Ivy (with Marcio Takara & Others) – This one turned a lot of heads, especially Team Walt's Heiko (it's his fav current series). Ivy gets the spotlight, and Wilson makes her compelling, complex, and —yes— dangerous as hell.
- Wonder Woman (2018-2020) (with Cary Nord & Others) – A solid run that leans more into epic fantasy and mythology than most Wonder Woman stories. Not her most famous work, but if you like your Diana with a mythic scope, this one’s for you. Unfortunately the TPs are OOP and there is no larger collected edition on the horizon. Let DC know that you want it!
- Air (with M.K. Perker) – Hard to explain, but worth reading. It’s a mix of surrealism, magic realism, politics, and romance. And it's a Vertigo series! Definitely one of Wilson's weirder books, but in the best way.
- The Hunger and the Dusk (with Chris Wildgoose) – A gorgeously illustrated, character-driven fantasy epic where humans and orcs have to set aside their hatred and work together. If you like slow-burn character drama mixed with swords and magic, this one’s for you.
Wilson doesn’t do shock value for the sake of it, and she’s not trying to be the loudest voice in the room. But her books? They sneak up on you. You read them, you enjoy them, and before you know it, they stick with you.
