"She's My Knight" is a series by mangaka Saisou, who is probably best known internationally for "My Tiny Senpai", which received an anime adaptation and will be published in Germany by Dokico.

Ikemen Kanojo to Heroine na Ore!", as "She's My Knight" is called in the original Japanese, was published from October 2019 to September 2022 in the mobile manga reading app Palcy from Kodansha Publishing, which mainly offers shojo and josei series. The series will be completed in three volumes.

How Was It?

"She's My Knight" follows Ichinose Haruma, an extremely good-looking teenager who is used to being idolized by girls. Nevertheless, he is not the most charming guy at school - that title belongs to Mogami Yuki, a girl who is not only taller but also prettier than him. At first, Haruma is annoyed that his flawless image as a pretty boy is disturbed by a girl, but soon he is in love with her, while vehemently denying that such a thing ever happens.

This type of romantic comedy that presents itself in a light and humorous way can be a challenge and certainly depends on what expectations you have for this title. "She's My Knight" is great for those who want to dive into an amusing romance full of charming high school scenarios with refreshing twists surrounding common shojo clichés. However, one should not approach the series with the expectation of getting a deep romcom title.

Haruma is portrayed as the typical hot-headed male protagonist who can't stand the fact that a girl seems to be not only taller, but also more charming and popular. However, he gradually realizes that his feelings for her are of a different nature and that he has fallen in love with her.

Haruma also shows typical Tsundere traits by constantly wrestling with his own feelings. This slowly developing affection is already evident in the first pages of the first chapter of "She's My Knight". His obsession with Yuki is the catalyst for Haruma's outbursts, his almost constant blushing, and forms the fulcrum of the story. For example, when Haruma stumbles at school, it is Yuki who catches him before he falls to the ground. Where Haruma believes he is the great savior, he now finds himself in the role of the damsel in distress. More and more often, Ichinose looks into the familiar, tender gaze of a girl who is not only the ideal kissing height, but also taller than him. Although they slowly approach each other, something unforeseen is always lurking to disrupt their romantic feelings at the most inopportune moment.

"She's My Knight" presents nothing completely new, but is aware of this fact and has fun using the well-known standards of the genre and using them to its advantage. With a wink, the manga tells its readers that it is aware of these familiar aspects and enjoys integrating them without taking itself too seriously.

As is usual with comedy titles, the main focus is on the characters, especially their facial expressions and gestures, which are conveyed very effectively. The backgrounds, on the other hand, are rather rudimentary. In some panels, however, elaborate embellishments can be found, which are particularly familiar from older shojo titles, such as roses. Kodansha is publishing the manga in a larger format, although there are no color pages or elaborate cover embellishments.

Conclusion

"She's My Knight" is not the manga to pick up if you're looking for something completely new and unique. But if you're familiar with the tropes of the shojo genre and want a light romantic comedy, then you'll certainly enjoy this short series.

"She's My Knight" is a quick, light read, and I can truly say that I enjoyed it while reading it. At the same time, though, I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I think it was too much of a good thing for me at times. I had a similar problem with "My Honey Boy" recently, for example. There were situations that I found really funny. But sometimes it was just too wacky for me or it became dull in the long run.
