I freely admit that Marvel has inspired very little enthusiasm or even simple interest in me in recent months.
When people ask me what has excited me lately or which series I would recommend, Marvel titles are most certainly not among them.
The ever-expanding Ultimate Universe, the numerous Red Band titles, or, most recently, Doom’s new world domination couldn’t change that.

But as an experienced comic enthusiast, I know that Marvel throws a lot of shells (and jellyfish) onto the swamped market and that you should still open a few shells from time to time, because some contain pearls that outshine everything and will continue to do so for a long time.

Pearls like those that Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto put in our shells every month, with this exceptional series.

Ultimate Spider-Man #14 once again shows with full force and all its narrative and artistic splendor what a fantastic series this is.

Hickman (and that’s not always a given with him) here finds exactly the right dosage for his mix of sinister thrills, eerie suspense, best Marvel superhero action, tongue-in-cheek Spidey humor and heart-wrenching emotions.
The tempo is just right. Everything runs along at a leisurely pace that suits my reading flow perfectly. Even the wild action sequences, the fight between Kraven and Spider-Man, are told just as calmly as the emotional conversation between Peter and MJ or the or the sweet encounter of Richard and Felicia, our two young heroes. All without losing any of its energy or impact.

And Checchetto, do I really need to say much more about his art? Isn’t it obvious even in just these few snippets I present you with this post?
With USM he delivers(skillfully supported by colorist Matthew Wilson), without doubt, the best work he has ever done and shows once again that he is simply one of the most talented and skilled artists that Marvel and the comic scene currently has to offer.

A great issue – gripping, funny, touching, moving and almost uncomfortably exciting, especially in the cliffhanging end.
Pearls like these make Marvel-shell searching worthwhile.
