3 Highlights from this Week's FOC

It seems like it will become a recurring theme that every newsletter will feature at least 1 classic that is brought back into a new spotlight. :P
After talking about Akira last time, let us dive into another dystopian sci-fi classic manga: The Ghost In The Shell 👻 🤖
If you are not familiar with this title and only heard of it because of this one hated adaptation from Hollywood, I beg you to give this title another chance…
But what is it about?
In this story we follow Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg who tackles cybercrime and conspiracies in a futuristic world. Not only is the world very advanced compared to ours, but everything is connected – which seems nice, but also brings in a lot of danger… The story really takes shape when the Puppet Master, a hacker who confronts Motoko, appears. This battle not only raises questions about free will and how machines and humans may live together, but also whether this world is ethical as it is. A PURE CLASSIC if you ask me!
Not only is it now the best time to try out another classic, because this one happens to receive a new anime adaptation soon, but also because we will receive an AMAZING box set coming out in February (and on FOC right now)!
This box set includes the three volumes that made this series a classic and lots of extras like 11(?!) posters, stickers and of course this amazing box :O
What is even more exciting with this new deluxe edition is that we finally get this classic in the regular Japanese manga format and without any censorship (like back then)!

One fact about my childhood: I always looooved Power Rangers! 🤖
I mean, are there people who don’t? :O
Amazing heroes fighting crazy villains in beautiful choreographies with big explosions and huge robots – this is peak fiction! :P
So, when I first heard of Go! Go! Loser Ranger! not only did the original Power Rangers theme run through my head, but I also was immediately sold on this one. Especially, because there is a twist that I did not ever see coming!
Thirteen years ago, your classic alien invasion attacked Earth and there was only one team that could stop them: the Divine Dragon Rangers!!!
They barely stopped them at first and now they keep coming back once a week. Thus, the Rangers have to fight this endless battle… or so society is made to believe.
In reality, the Rangers won pretty quickly after about a year. Since then they have been holding the aliens captive and release one of them each week to keep their popularity high. However… after years of this torture, one of these aliens has had enough and swears to destroy the Rangers by infiltrating them – bringing an end to this war!
I mean – HOW IS THIS NOT AWESOME??? 🤯
Yeah sure, it is sad to see the Rangers on the bad side, but this is so fresh and new that I just couldn’t let this pass. And now volume 16(!) is on FOC.

I want to start this section with a disclaimer: Smoking is not cool and I do not like when it is romanticized. However, what I do like is a good romance behind a supermarket. So I can make an exception with this manga series that is already at volume 6 – time flies! 🤯
This romance is not only fun because of its unusual setting, but also because of the fun dynamic between an overworked salaryman and a sarcastic cashier, who may slowly fall in love while smoking behind the supermarket she works at.
But at the beginning, this salaryman called Sasaki has no interest in the sarcastic cashier - quite the contrary. He only has eyes for her colleague: the friendly cashier Yamada. But after he cannot find her at the register, he is invited to smoke with this sarcastic cashier and they bond over Sasaki’s crush for Yamada. What is quite fun about this, is that this sarcastic cashier knows Sasaki quite well and vice-versa. But only one of them knows about it. HUGE PLOT TWIST INCOMING! 🤯
Not only is the art beautiful to look at and the duo quite lovable despite their flaws, it is also just a perfect cozy read for the coming winter. You can just feel the coldness of the air and the warmth of their dialogues. It is also very wholesome and explores so many different ideas with the cast of this series.
So, if you are a fan of cozy romance and enemies-to-lover-ish storytelling, then you definitely should pick up the first 5 volumes and pre-order this 6th, that is on FOC right now, one right after! :P
The Big Final Month Starts with a BANG!
Another month just starts off with a huge bang! Just a few more weeks until we close this year, but as you can see: Some good stuff is waiting behind that curtain – so let us not shed too many tears :P
