For the silver anniversary of my favorite series (yes, I’m just going to commit to that), we were served a green buffet with Poison Ivy #25, which was unexpectedly nutritious.
What initially looked like a nice anthology, like a good collection of various short stories from different creative team perspectives, actually was an atmospherically compiled ensemble that contained an unexpectedly large amount of on-going content.
Framed by G. Willow Wilson, Marcio Takara and Arif Prianto’s story Rewilding Part 1 and Two, which directly follows the events of issue #24 and shows Ivy and her Possé cleaning up after the storm, the four stories tell small episodes from the world around Pamela Isley.
Joanne Starer and Haining entertain us with a short but hefty trip from Batman’s past.
In Mushroom Hunters, Grace Ellis and Brian Level accompany two lowlifers on their search for mushrooms and their fateful encounter with the source of their magic mushrooms.
Gretchen Felker-Martin and Atagun Ilhan’s first story, which prepares us for what will await us in the upcoming storyline. While eliminating a couple of poachers, Killer Croc discovers a city emerging from the swamps.
In “The Pyrophyte” – which for me is the most narratively and graphically intense and atmospheric short – Dan Watters and Brad Simpson tell the second story, about a fanatical green terrorist and ivy devotee, which will surely be taken up again in the next few issues.
And so, for the 25th time, my conclusion is: another great issue that satisfies the craving with compelling stories and some stunning artwork (we even get some pretty new things from Marcio Takara!) on the one hand, but also further fuels the addiction with a thrilling outlook on the other.
Well then, here’s to the next 25 issues!
