So it’s the Turtles‘ turn, with the Aaron reboot.
I’m already wondering whether it’s the same in all publishing house meetings: "Guys, we need a makeover for our superheroes." - "hm, ponder, ponder" - "..." - "..." - "What’s Jason Aaron doing right now?" - "Great idea, I’ll see if he’s up for it."
I wouldn’t be surprised. He’s just too good at it. Approaching a character with fresh ideas, without neglecting the essentials. Whilst even the most hardened (and therefore often most critical) fans nod their heads in approval.
This time too?
*nod*
Okay, I’m not a particularly die-hard, critical fan, but rather someone who grew up with and still enjoys reading it. Though from what I’ve read and heard so far, the others are also nodding.
And, let’s be honest, if you’ve read Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, it’s hard to think of anything other than Yes! Maybe even a Wow! Or even a Hell yeah.
Jason Aaron gave us everything that makes a Turtles story for adults. It’s cool, dark, tricky and surprising.
Along with Joelle Jones and colorist Ronda Pattison’s absolutely stunning artwork (that actually got a few wows and hell yeahs out of me), this isn’t just a homage to the classic Mirage TMNT, it’s a true reboot.
Take the essence, mix it into 40 years of narrative and graphic comic development, and you get something that takes old fans and wins new ones.
To ensure that the entire graphic comic evolution comes to fruition, the crème de la crème of comic artists will be joining forces in the coming issues. I mean, Rafael Albuquerque, Cliff Chiang, Chris Burnham,... do I need to say more?
No, you probably already clicked on subscribe.
If not, you’d better.
Maybe it’s just the euphoria of issue #1 typing, but most likely it’s the certainty that Aaron and his elite artist possé have created something really big here.
