Big Books: June 2026 Pre-Orders
TABLE OF CONTENTS

So, big news in the omnibus world this month!

After that stellar variant cover for Zdarsky’s Batman omnibus, Walt’s gotten himself (and all of us) two more variants: Bilquis Evely’s fantabulous Wonder Woman cover and that moody Evan Cagle Detective Comics art piece (could I just get a print of it for my living room, please?)

While I know you were busy ogling those two, did you perchance also get a chance to take a look at other June Preos? Being your resident BBG (big book guy!), I am going to go a step further and take you through the Omnibus June Preos. These are the books I absolutely cannot wait to get my grabby hands on!

Wolverine: Old Man Logan Omnibus

Old Man Logan is a strange beast. Spawning from a Wolverine arc by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven almost twenty years ago, he has clawed his way to his own series and relevancy.

This was Wolverine at the end of his wits: 50 years into the future, with all his friends mysteriously dead, Logan (no longer Wolverine) lives in a shattered America under a villain’s boot... until a call to action (and a road trip) shakes him out of it.

I don’t think I’d be allowed to show the inner panels, gotta keep the newsletter at least PG13!

If this sounds familiar, it is because the film Logan was (sort of, kind of) based on this story. Ever since it was published, Old Man Logan has become a defining tale of a beaten man wrestling with his past, asking what the price of violence is... and when you should use it.

The story was so popular that it has spawned multiple “sequels” in the same dystopian universe, like Old Man Hawkeye and Old Man Quill. Furthermore, the character appeared in the mega-event of 2015 (soon coming to the screen near you), Secret Wars, which used this opportunity to have him jump over into the mainline universe. That’s how we got an Old Man Logan solo series, which this book also collects.

While the original story is good, and I even enjoyed Bendis’ Secret Wars mini, the real standout for me was the solo ongoing written by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino on art. If you have ever read Gideon Falls, you know what’s going to be on your plate.

Put this book in an IV and inject it directly into my bloodstream.

Sorrentino’s visceral and moody art is to die for, and Logan might as well do that while trying to change the future... and murder Hulk. It was a joy seeing this version of Logan interact with other Marvel characters and face his guilt over his past. We love to watch our heroes suffer, don’t we?

Gwenpool Omnibus

Recently, Marvel surprised us with a bunch of reprints announced, some very well needed and some... well... Among these, though, I was especially happy to see Gwenpool! If you have not had the chance to pick it up by now, I highly encourage you to do so this time around!

This is one of my favorite books on the shelf! It is a one-and-done book, which means you can pick it up without any prior context and just enjoy it immensely all throughout. It collects quite a few things, but there are two standouts, the main Unbelievable Gwenpool series and the West Coast Avengers.

Gwenpool started life as a joke: following the popularity of Spider-Gwen back in 2015’s Edge of Spider-Verse, Marvel published a series of mock covers featuring Gwen Stacy wearing different costumes. One of them was the variant of Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars, featuring Gwen wearing a pink and white version of Deadpool’s suit by wonderful Chris Bacchalo.

Following a fabulous fan response, Marvel had the brilliant idea of introducing the character into the universe, and the rest is history! Gwenpool is not Gwen Stacy that we know. Instead, Gwen Poole comes from a universe not unlike our own, and fell into Earth 616. Equipped with the knowledge of all things comic, she has to do everything she can to stay alive: which means staying relevant!

While Deadpool breaks the fourth wall in a jokey way, Gwenpool plays with it much more in line She-Hulk used to. She uses the very medium to her advantage, and keeps developing these skills as Unbelievable Gwenpool goes.

Christopher Hastings breathes heart and soul into Gwen, giving her a personality, a past and dread for the future and the upcoming cancellation of the series, because Gwen knows what that means. Meanwhile, Gurihiri play with the art the way Gwen does with the medium, bending the bounds of the panel into a spectacle that will make you laugh and cry, sometimes both at once!

Another part of this run (alongside many fun minis and cameos) is the short-lived 2018’s West Coast Avengers by Kelly Thompson. The book sees Hawkeyes create a group of old and new heroes, and is just a fun romp on the other coast of the Marvel Universe. It was great and it ended too early, and I am glad it was not orphaned out of collected editions.

Poison Ivy Deluxe Edition Vol. 1

We live in strange times. Back in the 90s, even a tertiary (or even quaternary) character like X-Man could have a long-running solo series spanning 75 issues. Nowadays, it seems pretty hard for even a “household” superhero name (other than the big big BIG ones) to hold a title for longer than 10, 20 issues (how many #1s has Steve Orlando’s Scarlet Witch had in the past 3 years?)

That’s why Poison Ivy is such a surprise, and such a poisonous little delight. G. Willow Wilson masterfully writes a tale of one of Batman’s most memorable rogues, as she takes on the world all by herself. Dr. Pamela Isley is done with the world of man: it’s time for a change!

This is psychedelic horror at its finest. Ivy isn’t your anti-hero, she’s a villain with vengeance on her mind. And since it’s a G. Willow Wilson book, you know that all the characters will be endearing and charming.

The book is a blast to read, and I’m so excited to see DC’s deluxe editions make their comeback! As someone who began their comic journey this way (shipping costs to Serbia are ROUGH), it’s such a treat!

Kingdom Come 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

For the end of this month’s newsletter, I will try not to bore you too much. I will just tell you to go do yourself a favor and pre-order Kingdom Come. If you haven’t read the book in these 30 years, now is the time.

Kingdom Come artwork

Mark Waid is one of those nerd writers who seems to know the most obscure of references, and Alex Ross paints each panel and cover like it’s Renaissance all over again. Together, they weave the tale of Justice League coming out of retirement because of the onset of new, violent heroes. With modern media, this story seems as relevant now as it was back in the 90s. GO GET IT!
