Sometimes it only clicks at the second attempt. With Absolute Batman #2, my enthusiasm for Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s alternative world of the Dark Knight has finally taken hold.
And I’m glad that at least with this new, fresh continuity, DC is keeping up the enthusiasm for Batman that was just lost with Zdarsky’s very poor effort.
I’m still a bit cautious with the superlatives and the “you-all-must-read-this” recommendations because the world that Snyder is building here already seems vewry complex in the second issue, at times with this vast line of new characters confusingly complex, perhaps even so complex that he can lose himself in it as an author.
But this absolutely bleak, Noir Knight atmosphere, the pace, the action and above all the incredible visual power with all these already iconic pictures that Nick Dragotta and colorist Frank Martin conjure up here is almost hypnotic.
You can tell how much fun the creative team is having here, how they are literally enjoying reinventing the Bat without having to worry about whether it will work, whether it will fit into the big picture.
And they succeed in a feat that many fail at: they let us join in the fun.
While issue #1 made me react cautiously at first because it was mostly loud and steroid-driven, this issue is slowly unfolding a story that offers more than just blasting and noise.
As I said, there are a lot of new characters coming together in a small space, which are still difficult to categorize, and I often stop to think about which character from the regular Batman universe this or that other character is now reflecting. But I think that if you free yourself from that and really give in to this Absolute pull, then it will all make much more sense, and especially more fun.
So yeah, I agree, this Absolute Batman has great potential to become something epic. And I am eagerly waiting to see where it is going now.
