Dick Tracy.
Dick Tracy is to blame.
For my everlasting love of detective noir stories.
For my undying passion for hard-boiled crime fiction.
For my weakness for all that cliché-loving American detective stuff.

It’s funny how such reboots not only make you nostalgic and reminisce about the past, but also show you chains that you weren’t even aware of before.
But yes, The Dick Tracy Show was indeed my childish soul’s first ever contact with crime fiction.
Could have been worse.

Because, as this new series about the detective in yellow from Mad Cave reminds me, Dick Tracy is a cool dude, timelessly cool.
Fortunately, the writing team of Alex Segura and Michael Moreci also manage to maintain the coolness and cliché without taking it too seriously. Because that’s what defines this character and his world, playing with their platitude.

The dialogues constantly make me want to get out pen and paper and draw a bullshit bingo. „I’ll take it from here.“ - „Even in the darkness, there’s hope.“ - „This is a dirty world, Tracy.“ and the classic: „Heya Mumbles, time to die.“
But it has to be. This is the basic framework, just as the basic color is yellow and the wrist radio is 2-way.

And there is a very fine line between seriously flat, painfully predictable entertainment and playing with it. In any case, the creative team manages to balance this fine line perfectly.

And that leads us to the next thing Dick Tracy #1 brings to the table that is good and right, Geraldo Borges‘ drawings and Mark Englert’s colors.
Very cinematic, vivid, and of course, wonderfully atmospheric. The play with shadows works just as well as the uniqueness of the characters and the spirit of the 1920s.

All in all, a good first impression, which is probably overshadowed by nostalgic enthusiasm.

But the storytelling is solid, the illustrations are excellent, so there’s a good chance that I’ll enjoy the second part of this series even after the waves of nostalgia have calmed down.
