No single issue on the table this week.
Which is because of these wonderfully gruesome stories from Harrow County.
And the gift and curse of working at a comic shop. Where you stumble across a special opportunity to fish something new out of the endless sea of comics at least once a day.
As happened with Harrow County Omnibus One.
(Omnibus number two is of course already here - purchased after the first three love-inducing chapters.)
I’d only heard good things about Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook’s sinister series, but I never really dared to try it, for wimp reasons.
Yet somehow this time it felt right, the price was a steal and I had to give in to my curiosity.
Fortunately!
I really didn’t think I’d ever say this, but Harrow County is by far the most beautiful and disturbing horror story I’ve read so far.
Cullen Bunn does what he does best and what makes him one of my favorite authors, spicing up his horror stories with as much heartfelt and touching drama as ghastly horror that in the maelstrom of the story you completely forget that you should actually be scared or rather creeped out by all this haunting stuff that’s going on.
The deeply touching story about Emmy, the rebirth of evil in the body of goodness, is far too gripping, the characters far too vivid, real and empathy arousing, Bunn’s language as concise as it is apt and made sonorous with a Poe-esque poetry, and Tyler Crooks artwork so hauntingly beautiful, not to become unconditionally addicted to this story.
I only wanted to have a peak.
And then, after 30 pages I woke up, in the clutch of Bunn and Crook and their modern gothic tale.
Harrow County gets under your skin. With these two such elementary emotions, fear and love.
The relationship between Emmy and her "father" is often so cute, so touchingly written and powerfully illustrated that I often couldn’t keep an Awww in company with a content smile from my lips...
Oh well, I could go on and on about what makes this comic so special, why I, who am always so sensitive to anything that triggers fear and disgust, don’t even notice that it’s a person’s skin talking in Emmy’s bag.
But I’ll leave it at:
My most beautiful new discovery so far this year.
