Finally, Chip Zdarsky’s Public Domain is back. Issue #6 continues what the first arc started so strikingly.
You can recognize good, impactful comic series by the fact that even after a long break, just a few panels are enough to suck you back into its world. And that’s exactly what Zdarsky does with this issue with his usual ease.
The Dallas Comics family business is off and running. More or less, because everyone is still busy throwing their ideas and hopes for the new Domain into the room, including themselves. While the big industry mill around Jerry Jasper and his sister magnate is also ramping up to throw new Singular books (‚n movies, ‚n merch,‘n ...) into the modern comic world.
The first thing I realize as I dive back into Zdarsky’s Public Domain is how much of a heart project the whole thing is. Simply a comic book story for lovers of the genre by a lover of the genre.
Not a fountain of creative ideas, gripping action or laugh-out-loud humor. It stays in between, in front of, wherever, it’s a story that takes me with it, that eases my mind.
It’s a laid-back yet touching story about comics. About their makers. About their fans. Their creation. Their business.
And it’s a flick about family. About Love. About Growing. Growing old. Change. Changing. Greed. Indulgence. Rivalry. Friendship...
...yes, alright, the listing is slowly drifting into theatrical territory. Sorry, I got carried away.
But what makes this story most affecting, apart from its poignant simplicity, is the liveliness of the characters.
Each one lives on in my head, after the last page has been turned. You can empathize with them all, and for most of them you can feel compassion and sympathy. My greatest sympathy, by the way, goes to the mother. The quiet center who, at the decisive moment, only drops a few sentences of wisdom that everyone who hears them understands and internalizes.
But enough already.
I’m glad that Public Domain is back.
And I’m certainly curious for The Domain entering the real world.
