I don’t know exactly what I was expecting, but after all the choruses and praise Falling In Love On The Path To Hell #1 got after its release, I was kind of expecting more.
That’s not to say I didn’t like the intro issue to Gerry Duggan and Garry Brown’s new series. No, no, on the contrary, this blend of Western, Eastern and horror-fantasy adventure is a truly remarkable blend.
Above all, it is a very visually powerful piece that will appeal to readers who like fast, bloody and battle-heavy, but artistically valuable comic action à la 300, Ronin or East of West.
Garry Brown and colorist Chris O’Halloran don’t just illustrate, they are the story. Image composition, shadow play, the atmospheric coloring, gestures and facial expressions, and the aforementioned liveliness of the fight scenes carry this comic through its entire 40 pages, and practically cry out for an oversize artist edition.
The story and its narrative also do what a good, a unique story should do. It creates, captivates, arouses curiosity, flows and doesn’t stutter for a moment. The two characters, Samurai Asami and gunslinger MacRaith, take shape early on and we are all very curious to see how things will continue with the two of them on the Island of Monsters aka the forecourt to hell, especially with the promise of the title in mind (btw. a fantastic title).
But now back to the initial question. What did I expect? Probably that it would impress me even more, that I would drop one wow after another from my lips.
It’s a strong start, the series will definitely have a home in my pullbox from now on, but I’m still waiting for the revolution. It’s quite possible that it will come. The potential is there.
