Let me start this newsletter with a big Happy New Year to you all!
Hope you had a lovely time, and are ready to jump back into my world of bad jokes and good comics.
So, bad jokes. Here at Walt’s Comic Shop, we know the importance and permanence of New Year’s Resolutions. You know them – you love them – and so do we! Coming up (and following through) resolutions, though…. is another story altogether. Being the wonderful Santa’s little helpers that we are, we are here to guide you on the journey of creating your own list!
I’ll start by sharing my process of coming up with the resolutions. Step one, come up with a traditional list (or if you are like me – grab one off Google):
- Start exercising
- Save money
- Get organized
- Travel more
- Spend more time with family and friends
Step two – elaborate on the goals and internalize them. For example, reading more will be easy in 2026 – I have a reading list of comics I need to tackle. Exercising should also be easy – I am in the process of moving, and lifting the boxes of omnis has been doing wonders for my upper body muscles… I’ll come up with something for leg days.
Saving money can be done through Walt’s awesome book deals. Organizing my comic shelf is something I do every time a new release hits me, and I realize that I just don’t have room for another X-Men omni on the shelf.
Travel more? Uuuum… I guess I started reading Vertigo books (great choice by the way)? That’s an exciting new location to visit? And of course, I get to hang out will all of my friends – Avengers, X-Men, Spidey, Batfam, Superfriends… See – it’s so easy to turn the boring old resolutions list into something much more achievable. And therefore, I present to you my new and improved 2026 resolutions list:

And now that we are done with this regularly scheduled segment, it’s time for part two: good books! Here’s what you will find on FOC this week:
The Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 7
You expected an FOC with a Spider-Man book (not written by Zeb Wells) to pass by without me talking about it? You would be very wrong!
This book is the perfect gap-filler we have all been waiting for. It was built to fit right between The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 6 and Roger Stern’s Spider-Man. With this book, almost 300 issues of Spider-Man are now collected in oversized format (and we’re really missing only 30 issues to get everything up to Clone Saga!)
A more important thing to note here is that this book collects the run of legendary writer Dennis O'Neil (from the Batman and Question fame) and long-time Spidey artist John Romita Jr. (there are also two annuals written by this small up-and-comer Frank Miller).
The run is often understated, being slotted between two amazing runs (by Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard before, and Roger Stern and Romita Jr. after). However, O’Neil and his artists introduced long-standing characters like Hydro-Man and Madame Webb. While it never reaches the heights of his DC work, O’Neil’s Spidey is still a blast to read and I’m excited to do so.

X-Men: The Messiah Trilogy Omnibus
Another FOC, another X-Men omni – and of course I am going to talk about it. This era of X-Men was MESSY, and we like our soap opera that way. However, the quality of the stories during this time is spotty – and that’s probably why Marvel picked and chose this collection the way they did.

This book collects the “modern trilogy” of X-Men. After the events of M-Day and Decimation, the Mutants were struggling without power and structure. During the period of 5 years, a variety of creators spun the story of Hope Summers – the first girl to manifest powers who becomes a mutant messiah.
Her birth moves the X-Men stories into a struggle for power, as different players try to control or eliminate the child. Stories collected here are Messiah Complex, Messiah War and Second Coming, which have become the staple of X-Men in 2000s, leading up into their big conflict with the Avengers.
This book offers stories by so many hard hitters it’s hard to name all – I will mention Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, Christopher Yost, Peter David and even some good Zeb Wells writing! The art is done by Chris Bachalo, Humberto Ramos, Marc Silvestri, Terry Dodson and many more. It’s a book full of surprises – both narrative and artistic. While I would have liked to have things collected in order, it will be great having all the blockbusters in one place.

The Flash: The Road to Rebirth Omnibus
2026 starts right – with a lot of gap-fillers! This book collects the back end of the Flash run in New 52 – fitting right after The Flash by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato. The book collects the work of two creators – it finishes off Buccellato’s run on the character, and then passes the torch to Robert Vendetti and Van Jensen.
While this will complete Flash runs spanning all the way back from Waid’s run in the 90s to the modern runs, there is a drop in quality once Manapul left the title during New 52. One of the reasons for this might be the influence of the CW show on the book – so if you are a fan of that, you might enjoy this book!

Animal Man By Tom Veitch And Steve Dillon Omnibus
Has there ever been a character that is less known by the general audience and yet that has had stellar runs through and through? Grant Morrison’s run on the character was revolutionary to comics, and Veitch and Dillon continued the tradition.
This book also collects a short stint by Peter Milligan in issues #27-#32, and then everything by Veitch and Dillon up to issue #50. The duo brought changes to the character that have been polarizing, but they infused the story with a lot of mysticism that has been memorable to this day.
I also enjoy Dillon’s art – while the book was published in the 90s, the art places it firmly into the 80s which I have been enjoying more and more in 2025. I am excited to delve even further into these books in 2026 – and hopefully we get Delano’s run as well (I am currently thoroughly enjoying his Hellblazer).
