For last month's DC vs Marvel themed giveaway we asked you who would win if Spider-Man fought The Flash, and wowzers, did you deliver! Many creative forces rose to the occasion and wrote in with numerous ways the two would defeat each other, as well as ways in which they... wouldn't. We can't thank you all enough for contributing, as it's been a lot of fun to read through them all. I wish we could publish the stories in full, but I'm regrettably limited in space here, though I can at least try to summarize a few of the highlights:
Michael's showdown, for example, envisioned Spider-Man webbing up an alley and The Flash running right into it, whereas Mariana saw a "constant red bull energized speedster who decided space and time are just mere suggestions", inferring that despite Spidey's reflexes, The Flash would win an exchange of blows handily... even if he would spend considerable time apologizing for it after.
Jason and Emil both foresaw that the fight would end in a decisive draw, with the former's imagined squabble concluding with the realization that they each had far more pressing matters to attend to, like defeating the teamed up Reverse Flash and Carnage, who had probably been looking at the fight with some confused amusement. Emil, meanwhile, saw Barry Allen brainwashed by AIM to think Spider-Man was after his girlfriend, and it took Peter, Mary Jane and Iris' bundled forces to talk him back to his senses, finally taking down AIM together with the others.
Several of you realized that the fight was a genuine toss-up, with either contestant just as likely to win. Like Ivanka, who surmised that Spider-Sense, high intelligence, web traps, distracting chatter and clever use of the environment could see the fight (pardon the pun) swing Spidey's way, but it might as well be Flash's mastery over the Speed Force that could overpower an unprepared webcrawler so quickly he wouldn't even get the time to use any of his tricks.
Vittorio could also see either hero take the win, but only if Spidey called in a little help from his friends. Deadpool, for example, would be all to happy to help trounce those "Damn Competitors". Without such help though, Vittorio says the fight would be "logically and narratively impossible" for Spidey to win, and over so quick that spectator Lobo, who's all too willing to watch this all go down, ends up spending most time complaining about how lame that fight actually was.
In closing, I felt Chris summarized this titanic clash most fittingly: "Flash probably wins the fight, but Spider-Man might just steal the show!" And what's ultimately most important in this spare time entertainment, one could wonder.
But we're here to crown winners, and going by sheer number, there is one clear hero winning this fight, as twice as many submissions imagined THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN clutching it out, going home with an undisputed victory under his belt. Congrats, Peter! The patented Parker Luck couldn't hurt you today. And sorry, Barry/Wally, no matter how fast you are, you can't run from this loss.
As for the winners of the giveaway, it was a terribly difficult decision, but we ultimately landed on the following two superheroic writers:
Justin remembered that Spider-Man actually has a suit that's perfect for the occasion, as it turns him into a speedster himself: the Velocity Suit from Insomniac's video game universe! While The Flash may still be faster, it does a lot to even the odds and leaves Barry ultimately underequipped against Spider-Man's familiarity with the neighbourhood, as well as his cunningly and lightning-quickly placed web traps. Congratulations, Justin, you will receive Spider-Man by David Michelinie & Mark Bagley Omnibus Vol. 1 *NICK&DENT*!
Rebecca wrote two incredibly engaging and action-packed stories titled "Flash's Last Hunt" and "Crisis of the Spider-Verse", imagining entirely different encounters with opposite outcomes. The vivid descriptions of the fights left little to the imagination, and thanks to the charming, character-infused dialogue, if there had been pages to turn, they'd have been turning almost by themselves. Congratulations, Rebecca, we will send you The Flash by William Messner-Loebs & LaRocque Omnibus Vol. 1 NICK&DENT!
Big, BIG thank you again to everyone who participated. Even if you didn't win, please do keep that wonderful imagination machine of yours churning and definitely keep writing it all down!
