Oh, I seriously enjoy Tom King's and Rafael de Latorre's Penguin noir.

In issue #3 we watch Godfather Penguin collecting, gathering the members of his new team, his new Goons.

I always enjoy these recruitment scenes, an element mostly used in gangster or heist movies.
Getting to know the members, watching the team grow, how they struggle, how they long, how they become.

As is so often the case, everyone here is a failed existence and has weaknesses, desires, deads, problems that act as the perfect bait or leverage for Cobblepot to convince them to join his team and his mission.

King makes me feel like I need to know this once splattered now fishy glued bunch, the Force of July.
But a little research reassured me that I didn't need to know them. Phew.
I was not even able to read by the time Lady Liberty, Major Victory, Mayflower, Sparkler, and Silent Majority were up to mischief as a somewhat paramilitary force, as opponents of the Outsiders. Back in the 1980s to be more precise.

Tom King does another fantastic job here, using this storytelling trick to introduce us to the individual characters in 20 pages with a depth and detail that would take some others a whole arc to achieve.

And I love this cool, black and blue mood that King creates with his slowly growing, rippling story, de Latorre with his fine-lined, cinematically paneled drawings, and Marcelo Maiolo with his dark, earth-toned coloring.

Only one thing that bothers me. DC should definitely have released this one under the Black Label, it's really annoying to have 60% of a speech or thought bubble grawlixed.
Or would you %$§&"§ enjoy this (§&$%"? I don't &§&($)§ think so.

But if the flood of Grawlix is all I have to criticize about The Penguin, I can get over it.

And eagerly await what the Penguin, now equipped with the Force of July goon squad, has planned next.

And you?!
You should go and $@!%&#@ read this $%&§!
