And yet, this is probably what scares me most, I can’t stop reading.
With Dark Spaces: Dungeon #1, Scott Snyder once again takes over the writing himself in his anthology series. And how he does it! To call it a spine-chilling tale would be an understatement, it is (literally) spine-breaking.
If the aim of the Dark Spaces Anthology series was to “explore our deepest fears of the unknown” then Snyder serves us the most profound piece of his collection to date with this thriller.
The tension and horror towards the end are almost unbearable.
This is not only due to the insane idea of the dungeon, the juxtaposition of family happiness and the worst childhood trauma, and a villain who, despite (or because of) his brief appearance, could hardly be more terrifying.
This is also due to the fact that Hayden Sherman is – after Dark Spaces: Wildfire – back on board and creates an intense, dense and cinematic atmosphere with his great illustrations (skillfully gloomy colored by Patricio Delpeche).
I hope that the traumatized bad ass detective will bring enough tension relief, because otherwise I’ll be sweating a lot while reading and the night after.
Definitely the most terrifying series opener I have read in a long time. Snyder and Sherman certainly seem to have brought some very profound fears out of the depths here.
And yet, weirdly, I am hooked.
