Tom King and Daniel Sampere prove to be a first-class team in the second issue of their joint Wonder Woman project as well.

First and foremost, Wonder Woman #2 is dramaturgically brilliant.
Rarely have I seen such a harmonious juxtaposition of suspenseful, epic action and quiet, prosaic character study.

Parallelism plays an important role here on several levels.
While in the flashback we see Diana fighting a fierce duel in the arena – sword against sword – versus the now rogue Amazon Emelie, the Diana of the present faces the US Army – lasso against artillery and infantry.

The visual power and attention to detail with which Daniel Sampere presents these epic battles is truly breathtaking. I wouldn’t need King’s prosaic narratives, which demand focus and leisure, to slow down my reading pace. The pictures alone make me pause again and again to admire the fantastic artwork.

Tomeu Morey supports this side-by-side of the events with his sensitive coloring, which is based on a color palette dominated by gold and earth tones.

This issue has something of the atmosphere of the great screen epics, such as Ben Hur or Spartacus, this tension-filled, unhurried storytelling, that still exudes enough force and action to impress you.

It’s also very impressive how King and Sampere pull off this juxtaposition – the parallels between Diana’s arena battle against Emelie and Wonder Woman’s battle against Sargent Steel’s forces – from start to finish.
Two stories that merge into one, telling us so much about Diana, but also add insights to the defected Emelie.

So once again, I am thoroughly amazed by what this fab team is delivering and can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
