It is that time of the year again when a Marvel movie hits the big screens... And it's been a long time since May. Just long enough that waiting another week for Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Photon to hit the big screens in The Marvels feels impossible.
For those of you in the comic community who still watch MCU movies (which might not be a lot of people, sniff 😢) and for those who simply enjoy the movies, we've compiled a list of short and budget-friendly comics that you might be interested in if you can't wait to see "The Marvels" and get more of them. Monica Rambeau - The Captain Marvel - Photon
Monica Rambeau is a character who hasn't had the opportunity to be fully developed in the MCU yet. However, the OGs (like my Gen X boss, Walt) know her and refer to her as Captain Marvel. She was the first to take on the mantle after Captain Mar-Vell in the 1970s.
Monica later passed on the Captain Marvel mantle to Mar-Vell's son, which helped us understand that the title of Captain Marvel can be passed down. "Captain Marvel - The Saga of Monica Rambeau" delves into her beginnings as Captain Marvel, her journey to becoming a powerful Avenger, and the reasons why she eventually relinquished the Captain Marvel title.
If you're more interested in Monica's character in the MCU and the comics, Eve L. Ewing's "Photon" run from 2022 might pique your interest. This comic is also a great choice if you're looking for more stories about black female superheroes written by black female superheroes in real life!
Captain Marvel aka. Carol Danvers

Every Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel comic holds its own power, but Kelly Thompson's run might be the right one to read in this situation. Why?
After spending months in space, protecting various planets, Captain Marvel returns to Earth. Sounds familiar? But there's more to the story. When Captain Marvel needs a new crew to battle a new villain, she teams up with none other than Echo. Yes, the Echo whose series trailer just dropped this week and left many people in awe of how good it looks (not me; I knew it was going to be good 😌).
This one also leans toward the more serious and less lighthearted side, which could be appealing to those who often complain about that!
Omar from Near Mint Conditions also did a review of the Captain Marvel by Kelly Thompson Omnibus, and it does look really promisingly good!
Ms. Marvel - A hero for this generation!
Yes, she's a teenager. Yes, she writes fanfiction. Yes, sometimes she acts like a kid. So what? Would you go crazy if your teenager behaved like a teenager? I don't think so.
I would love to recommend G. Willow Wilson's entire run on Ms. Marvel, but sadly it's not available right now, and it consists of ten Trade Paperbacks, which might be a bit much for some.
Fortunately, "Marvel-Verse: Ms. Marvel" offers a concise introduction to Kamala Khan and what makes her the superhero she is! You'll get to know Kamala, her friends, her family, and her enemies, all of whom play a significant role in shaping her character.
And if you're wondering whether Ms. Marvel ever ventures beyond her New Jersey bubble, then you'll be pleased to know that she does. She teams up with some of the coolest superheroes, like Wolverine, Spider-Man, and even Moon Knight. "Ms. Marvel: Fists of Justice" demonstrates that she can hold her own with household names and be a perfect partner in crime-fighting! And if you're still not convinced, I invite you to read THIS.
