The Resistance Universe is still new territory for me, but I thought, after a couple of lastingly impressive (re-)encounters with Straczynski recently, I’d just take the opportunity and try my beginnings with U & I #1.

For all those who have just as little or even less idea what the Resistance Universe is, a few words about it:
Writer J. Michael Straczynski, artist Mike Deodato Jr. and colorist Frank Martin launched The Resistance in 2020, a franchise set in a dystopian world ravaged by the Great Death, a pandemic that has killed 400 million people.
At the same time, however, 10 million beings who survived the disease became so-called reborns with superpowers.

However, this premise is also cleverly woven unto U & I #1’s storyline, so that you can use this six-part series as an entry point even without any previous knowledge.
Which I will probably do. Because I had perhaps always noticed something out of the corner of my eye, I even have Knighted #1 - 5 lying here, unread, only I got into the whole thing rather unsuspectingly with this issue.

For U & I, Straczynski joins forces with artist Mike Choi and promises a modern „unlikely love story“.
Even though issue #1 is a bit short, more of a teaser than a detailed intro, maybe that’s what makes it so appealing to me.

We meet „U“, who wakes up from his rebirth with no memory and an obviously displaced reality. He uses his powers to take care of the bad guys in the streets of the big city. Until he finally tangles with the wrong people.

We also get to know Isabelle, or „I“, who is also a Survivor, but unfortunately she has not been reborn with superpowers. She also lost her parents to the disease and since then, thanks to her shitty, greedy uncle, somehow tries to survive on the street, without money, without a destination.

Yes, that was chapter 1.

But that’s enough to keep me on the hook.
Because Straczyinski can write.
And Mike Choi can draw.
The comic lives from a very dense suspenseful and action-packed atmosphere, very fine details, sharp colors and a stirring cinematic change of perspective and focus.
Especially the visualization of U’s reality shift really impressed me.
