Even though I don’t count myself among the Avengers readers, I couldn’t let Avengers: Twilight #1 pass me by. Firstly because Chip Zdarsky writes. And secondly, Daniel Acuna takes care of the artwork.
(Third, as a cherry on top: that wonderful pop-culture pun by Skottie Young on the variant.)

And the first impression, this opening sequence, is pleasing and promising.
We find ourselves in a dystopian future where the superheroes, especially the Avengers, no longer exist as we knew them. After a mega-fuckup (called H-Day) the former heroes have ceded their prestige, their power and their strength.
Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America, but just an old man with no superpowers and a debatable reputation.
The world is dominated by dubious rulers and laws and - as is typical of Zdarsky - opinion-forming media that don’t take the truth too seriously and spin history in the way that best serves the present.

So much for the basic setting, more would only spoil things. I also don’t need to say much about the quality of the storytelling, as Chip Zdarsky is at the helm here. The basic idea provides plenty of material for further developments, both at character and story level.
And I have enough confidence in Zdarsky’s skills that he will provide enough suspense, action and interesting character developments.

But the real highlight is Daniel Acuna’s artwork, which deserves to be called exactly that. His style is simply stunning.
This lively mix of realistic details and expressionist elements, this futuristic vision of the future, which is probably not entirely without purpose reminiscent of dystopian classics such as Blade Runner or Ghost in the Shell, is truly a pleasure to behold.

I’m not completely convinced yet, but I’m sweetened enough to look curiously forward to the next issue, and the development that Cap, Luke and the new Defending Avengers will take.(Third, as a cherry on top: that wonderful pop-culture pun by Skottie Young on the variant.)

In a gleaming new world of prosperity, Captain America is no more. But Steve Rogers still exists, floating through an America where freedom is an illusion, where THE AVENGERS are strangers and his friends are long dead. But is the… read more
