When people say comics can be convoluted, with decades of history and baggage, I like to scoff. “You don’t really need to know every single moment of a character’s life! You usually pick up the current run and just go with it,” I say. And then people ask me what Jean Grey comics to read.
The woman who began her life in the pages of X-Men #1 as Marvel Girl (carrying the eponymous company name) carries one of the longest and most complicated histories in all of Marvel Comics. Through countless clones, retcons, and resurrections, Jean Grey has remained an iconic member of the team, someone you cannot imagine the franchise without.
She began as a young telekinetic mutant whom Professor Xavier introduced to Cyclops, Beast, Angel, and Iceman. Through the years, we saw her powers grow and change as she developed from Marvel Girl to Phoenix, to Dark Phoenix, and finally came out of this crucible as Jean Grey. And yet, somehow, modern stories still pull these same threads again and again.
But worry not: you do not need to read every single X-Men, X-Factor, and X-comic from 1963 to this day. In this article, I will take you on a journey through the major moments in Jean Grey’s life and the most important comics connected to each one, so that you can jump right into the modern runs.
The Best Jean Grey Comics for New Readers

“So, what Jean Grey comics should I actually read as a new reader?” I would say this is quite easy: grab the books that showcase important sides of Jean, from the classic Phoenix story to the modern solo. These are:
The Phoenix Saga
This is where it really begins for Jean Grey. Claremont moved her from a potential love interest to a character with power and someone you should not be messing with. It shows how Jean Grey became Phoenix and started to establish the cosmic mythology that would shape her later history.
The Dark Phoenix Saga
How many times have we visited Jean Grey as Dark Phoenix over the years? This is her defining classic story, and the one whose impact is felt even today. Dark Phoenix and Jean Grey somehow go hand in hand, and she keeps working to overcome this turning point in her life.

Jean Grey Returns and X-Factor Begins
Without going into spoilers (or retcons, really), Jean Grey returns, and X-Factor is formed because of it. This is the first of many Jean Grey resurrections through the years. Can you blame her? The woman is literally called Phoenix. This series sees the reunion with the original five X-Men.

New X-Men by Grant Morrison

After her first return, Jean Grey hadn’t dealt with the Phoenix Force much, and the comics absolved her of the Dark Phoenix past. And then Grant Morrison took over the X-Men title in 2001, giving us a more mature Jean Grey story that developed her psychic powers, relationships, and renewed connection to Phoenix, as well as yet another death.

Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey

Jean Grey didn’t appear in Marvel Comics (as an adult) for 13 years after Morrison. The Return of Jean Grey in 2017 was the second resurrection of the character, finally letting us address the question “Does Jean Grey die in the comics?” with “Yes, but she always comes back.”

X-Men: Red

While X-Men Blue and Gold are the team names of old (sorry, 90s kids), it’s the Red team that I consider one of the best Jean Grey comics. This is Jean without Phoenix powers! Instead, she is a capable leader, telepath, and X-Man! I loved the direction of splitting her from Phoenix completely and finally giving her the merits she deserves.
Jean Grey: Flames of Fear
Is there anything better than reuniting with an old friend? That’s what the legendary writer Louise Simonson did in the Fall of Krakoa, penning this Jean Grey solo comic full of choices and mistakes. Jean Grey reflects on her past and the defining moments that shaped her life. Will she come out on the other side changed?
Phoenix
This is the most recent Jean Grey comic, penned by Stephanie Phillips. If you want to see Jean Grey embrace Phoenix, then this is the story for you. We are also reintroduced to White Phoenix, which is a mirror of Dark Phoenix: Jean becoming the perfect avatar for the Phoenix Force.

Jean Grey Reading Order: The Most Important Milestones
While the books I outlined here are some of the best Jean Grey comics, as you can imagine, her history is much more complicated than that. In order to discuss it, we need to start at the beginning…
Jean Grey’s First Appearance in X-Men #1

Jean Grey’s first appearance was alongside her fellow X-Men: Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, and their mentor, Professor Charles Xavier, in the pages of X-Men #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In 1963, her moniker was Marvel Girl, and she was mostly used in the most stereotypical way you can imagine… Her powers were also very limited: she could move things with her mind.
Jean Grey Becomes Phoenix
Sadly, X-Men comics do not give Jean Grey agency or dimension for 20 years. It wasn’t until Claremont took over in 1975 that Jean Grey finally became a powerful protagonist equal to the other team members. X-Men #101 shows how Jean Grey became Phoenix and sets her on the path to ruin.
The Dark Phoenix Saga and Jean Grey’s Death
This is the most famous Jean Grey comic of all time. There’s no doubt about it. It has become the foundation for so much of her history throughout the years and has been adapted in film (twice!) and animation.
The story sees Jean Grey embrace the Dark Phoenix persona, becoming more dangerous and bloodthirsty. While Claremont’s representation of “corruption within” might not be perfect, it is still very compelling and ends with a triumphant sacrifice and the first time Jean Grey dies in the comics.

Jean Grey Returns and X-Factor Begins
The first death of Jean Grey lasted for six years. In 1986, she returned in the pages of X-Factor #1, giving us the first of many retcons. Writer Bob Layton explains that the person who emerged from Jamaica Bay calling herself Phoenix was never Jean Grey. Instead, she was in a healing cocoon at the bottom of the bay, waiting to be resurrected for the first time.
Jean Grey Rejoins the X-Men
The 90s were a time of big change for the X-Men, when the team was split into Gold and Blue after Xavier famously asked, “What am I going to do with fourteen X-Men?” Uncanny X-Men #281 onward follows Storm’s Gold Team and shows yet another Jean Grey death, though only apparent this time.
Jean Grey Marries Cyclops

Now, Jean Grey often goes hand in hand with our problematic king, Scott Summers. After her resurrection, he packs his suitcase and leaves his wife and child to run around with his teenage love. The wedding of Jean Grey and Cyclops is a milestone moment in X-Men comics and one of the rare ceremonies not interrupted by a villain!

Jean Grey Reconnects With the Phoenix
Jean did not reconnect with the Phoenix Force for quite some time after her wedding. However, she did start embracing the moniker and her classic green-and-gold Phoenix costume. At the same time, during the Apocalypse: The Twelve storyline, her telekinetic abilities fluctuated while her telepathy rose to Omega levels, making her one of the most powerful X-Men.
Jean Grey Dies Again in New X-Men
If you have picked up an X-Men comic book in the 00s and 10s (is that what we call them?), you might have noticed an absence of Jean Grey. This is because Morrison’s run ended with another Jean Grey death after a fatal fight with Magneto. We wouldn’t see this character for 13 long years. Unless…?
The Time-Displaced Jean Grey Arrives in the Present
All good X-Men comics have to have some time travel shenanigans. In 2013, Beast came up with the fantastic idea to bring the original five X-Men into the present. After some struggle, the team decides to stay: enter the adventures of young Jean Grey! This is Jean before all the horror, learning to (mis)use her powers and dealing with everything her adult counterpart did. Compelling stuff!

Adult Jean Grey Returns in Phoenix Resurrection
It took quite some time for another Jean Grey resurrection, via another retcon and a magic Phoenix egg. This story marked a permanent return of Jean Grey to Marvel Comics. This time, she rejects the Phoenix Force, asking for time to live her life (and get her own team of X-Men).
Jean Grey Leads X-Men: Red
The next step for Jean was to form X-Men Red, a “third” team after Gold and Blue. This comic book sees Jean Grey finally step into the leadership role, with her team combatting anti-mutant hate and misinformation. It’s written by Tom Taylor and shows how versatile and interesting Jean Grey comics can be even without Phoenix.
Jean Grey Fully Embraces Phoenix
Of course, history is tough to escape, and so is the Phoenix Force for Jean Grey. In the Fall of Krakoa, Jean Grey was killed once again in X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1. Her consciousness resided in the White Hot Room, where she once again confronted her past traumas as well as the Phoenix Force itself. She finally accepted that the two are forever intertwined and embraced the relationship. The modern Jean Grey comics show her as a stable host, capable of traveling the cosmos to protect all life.
Jean Grey and Phoenix: What Do You Need to Know?
If you are still with me, you have encountered Phoenix quite a few times. While the two are intertwined, there are still some lingering questions…
Is Jean Grey the Phoenix?
Yes and no. As you saw, the Phoenix is both a cosmic entity as well as Jean’s moniker, with or without the Force within her. At the moment, they are “intertwined,” with Jean being a willing host. You might call their bond symbiotic…
How Did Jean Grey Become Phoenix?
In Uncanny X-Men #101, Jean pilots a space shuttle through a lethal solar storm to save the other X-Men. In the experience, Jean is seemingly vaporized while the shuttle crashes into Jamaica Bay. From the water emerges Jean Grey in a new green-and-gold costume, claiming to be Phoenix.
What Are Jean Grey’s Powers Without Phoenix?
Originally, Marvel Girl had telekinesis: she could move items with her mind. It was later revealed (in X-Men #43 in 1968) that Professor X put psychic barriers on her mind after her powers manifested. Jean sadly witnessed the death of her friend Annie and experienced it firsthand, traumatizing the young girl (something very familiar to those who saw Spider-Man: Brand New Day). Jean also shares a unique psychic bond with her husband, Cyclops.
What Is Dark Phoenix?
It’s tough to pinpoint what Dark Phoenix is. Usually, we accept it as a corrupted manifestation of the Phoenix Force without any restraint. The origin of the name comes from The Dark Phoenix Saga story, where the villain Mastermind manipulates Jean Grey by encouraging her dark urges, which leads her to commit genocide, something she tries to atone for for the rest of her life. The X-Men couldn’t defeat Dark Phoenix. Only Jean Grey did, through self-sacrifice.
Jean Grey Comics FAQ (sweet and short)
What Jean Grey Comic Should I Read First?
Honestly, I would say just jump straight into Uncanny X-Men #101 or just the Dark Phoenix Saga. Luckily, these have been printed in countless formats, so they shouldn’t be too hard to find!
What Should I Read After The Dark Phoenix Saga?
There are a couple of things you can look for. Chronologically, the next appearance is in X-Factor #1. You could also pick up Uncanny X-Men #281 (Blue & Gold era) for her on the X-Men team again. New X-Men by Grant Morrison lets her play a huge part too, and X-Men: Phoenix – Endsong might be an odd pick, but it was a weird mini dealing with the repercussions of Morrison’s run.
What Book Collects Jean Grey’s Return?
It really depends which return you are interested in. You can either go for X-Factor #1 (and then follow the ongoing series) for the original story, or go for Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey if you are looking for a more modern resurrection. Finally, Phoenix by Phillips is also a return of Jean Grey in a way, and you could grab those trades too.
Does Jean Grey Die in the Comics?
Yes. Quite frequently. Throughout this article, I have counted at least four occasions in which she perished or appeared to have died (Dark Phoenix Saga, Blue & Gold, New X-Men, and Hellfire Gala/Fall of X). But the nature of Phoenix is rebirth, and Jean Grey is currently very much alive and kicking!
Does Jean Grey Have Solo Comics?

Yes, she does. While she was a supporting character for half a century, she did get three headlining solos:
- Jean Grey (2017-2018): Dennis Hopeless takes young Jean Grey on a trip through her life.
- Jean Grey (2023-2024): Louise Simonson writes a mini during Fall of X where, you guessed it, Jean deals with her life and Phoenix.
- Phoenix (2024-2025): Stephanie Phillips takes Jean back into space, where she travels from planet to planet saving lives as Phoenix.
