Because literally nobody demanded it: The blog is back!
The more newsletter subscribers we have, the more intimidated I become by it: Will they really enjoy reading a 3000+ word glossary about our bestsellers? (some, maybe) Or are they just waiting on the occasional "The sale is up!"-promo bit? (the majority, probably).
So I decided that the longer bits will wander to the newly resurrected blog on our website. Maybe not the perfect fit for our, let's say, more "e-commerce oriented" web-presence, but being different is supposed to be really cool, is what I've heard.
Before we continue with our TOP300 ranking, let me drop a few numbers, to put things into perspective. Firstly, it's ranked by copies sold. Which means a 150$ Omnibus is up against a 3.99$ comic book. You might think that it's nonsense, but since we mainly sell the big books and singles make only 2-2.5% of our overall revenue that works out pretty well. Secondly, the final sales number has it all: pre-order numbers, actual online-sales at release plus books sold in our brick-and-mortar shop in Berlin. Which means some of the bestsellers are pre-orders which are not even released yet (yuk!). If I find the time to do it (so, probably not), I I would like to create a TOP50 for every "stream", especially because the brick&mortar products are so very different from the online sales. Fourthly, we did add variant covers into one product, but we didn’t do the same with format. So the Watchmen Absolute, the Paperback and the Oversized Hardcover are listed separately (resp only one made it into the TOP300), but the three different covers of Wolverine Omnibus V3 are added into one. The only exception is the Boom hardcovers, where we combined Slipcase Editions and the Hardcovers they... slipcase? ... into one. Because it is essentially the same product to be honest. Lastly, why 300 (actually 320, since a whopping 20 books share that rank), why so many in God's name?!? Because it was just too hard to stop!
Generally, 2022 was a great year for us. Not without its problems, of course. In the summer we had a few months where we didn't get any new Omni products and I also realised that I over-ordered some books, which were now sitting on the shelves. Not a bad thing for Omnis to begin with (Omnis are forever!), but the combination of dwindling cash-flow is low and high inventory inventory AND constant re-scheduling of all the hot products that were about to be released in summer and fall AND a record-high dollar-pricing... But things quickly turned around when the books started to ship again. And we also used the lesson and have started to diversify our product range more.
In 2022, we sold a staggering 3000 SKUs (as in "stock keeping unit", which defines a unique product), which shows that yes, we evolved into a "generalist" comic store. Which still makes 60% of its revenue with Omnis and will hopefully continue to do so FOREVER! A propos: In 2022 we sold (at least!) 4777 Omnis. Talking actual copies here, not different titles. However, with Marvel's release policy, we might get there rather sooner than later.
And we almost quadrupled our revenue in 2022 vs 2021. Which sounds a bit more impressive than it really is, because 2021 was our first full fiscal year after a few baby-stepping months in 2020. It also says nothing about profit and I will definitely not discuss this here ;) But let's just say our extreme (back-)stock-expansion didn't just materialise out of thin air. All in all: great year. Venomnibus by Cates is the clear winner in 2022 — not a big surprise, huh? Actually, when adding the pre-order copies from 2021 & the ones we just sold in 2023 it's the first Omni to cross the magical three-digit barrier! Yup, more than 100 sold of this bad boy. Uncanny X-Men V5 (2) follows on its heels , and looking at the current pre-order numbers, it's easy to predict that this will be a big seller in 2023 as well.
I was also quite surprised to see that Thor by Aaron V1 (8) has also almost crossed the magical 100 and is now our second-best-selling product of all time. We still have a few copies left... in case Marvel takes a little longer with a reprint.
If 2021's pre-order sales would be added the Gotham Central Omnibus (6) would be a Top3 book as well. Which I find extremely surprising and a tremendous success for an almost-non-superhero book; and a reprint to begin with. DC must have taken the hint and released everything else they had in their catalogue by Ed Brubaker, though Sleeper (79) and Catwoman (64) didn't chart nearly as high. I am 100% sure it would have added a good 20-30% to the sales if they've added "by Ed Brubaker" to the titles, since his regular readers don't normally buy DC Omnis.
Star Wars Darth Vader By Soule Omnibus (9) was by a long shot the most successful Star Wars Omni of the year. Bounty Hunters (25) did also pretty well, the others... not so much. I am convinced a reprint of the much-beloved Old Republic would have done better numbers, but it seems reprinting Star Wars, Conan and other properties which don't originate with Marvel seems to be more difficult for them.
X-Treme X-Men on 10 is another BIG surprise, at least for me. It's not one of the most lauded X-Men runs, and that it outsold the Hickman is quite interesting (though the Hickman Omni already pre-sold in 2021).
All in all a pretty diverse bunch, the Top-tenners, and the incoming pre-order numbers prove that the popularity of the Omnibus format has not peaked, yet. Or that we still attract new customers, both of which I am very thankful for!
It's hard to call the pre-order numbers for the Superior Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 1 (11) a disappointment, but it's definitely not the blow out of the water that was expected — by me at least. Fans have begged for an Omni treatment for this run for many years. It could have been the timing of the announcement in September. It was overall our most problematic month when the general insecurity in Europe was at an all-time high (and the Dollar as well). Or it shows that more modern runs have a tougher time with the Omni-crowd? I'll talk about this when we get further down the list.
A pleasant surprise was the high ranking of the Miracleman Omnibus (13). I do not fool myself that my Christmas recommendation had anything to do with it, but it's just nice to have a book written by "the original author" so far up in the charts.
The King in Black Omnibus and the Batman No Man's Land Omnibus Vol. 2, DC's second entry come in at 15, resp. 16, are both great successes for 150$ books. It is very clear that thick, -- well, I won't call them expensive books, because when you get down to the price-per-page ratio some of those thickies can be "cheaper" than your standard 100$-Omni -- let's call them high-priced books, well those are a tougher sell. The Venomnibus moved almost double the units compared with King in Black, I would've expected the two books much closer to one another.
Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus V1 ranks on 18 and I think this is spectacular. And sensational! And also Web of! (Actually I could bet we’ll get a Web-of-announcement later in 2023) This is the fourth printing of the book (of which the DM variant has gone out of print yet again a few weeks ago!) and it just keeps selling to a new audience. This is the best proof that new people are still entering the Omni-game. All volumes of Amazing that we stocked in 2022 charted in the upper two thirds of the Top100. And with a reprint of V4 around the corner, we only have to wait for an announcement of Volume 6!
At 21 we have the first non-Omni: X-Men Inferno Hardcover — the closing of Hickmans stint on X-Men. Followed on 21 by the first non-hardcover, namely the Moon Knight by Lemire and Smallwood Complete Collection TP. This one sold everywhere: online, at the cons, in the brick&mortar. It's also easy to hand-sell it because not only is it a very good comic, but it can also be read and understood without previous knowledge of the character nor a diploma in Marvel continuity. People watch the TV shows and ask about the comics: yes, the phenomenon exists! What's missing is the product which we can hand them. While it is great to have new series for characters currently in focus, most people don't want to start with a commitment; and every Volume 1 is one. They ask about "the best", the one classic story with a beginning and an end. You know, the "Killing Joke" or "Year One" or "Dark Knight Returns" or "Long Halloween" of the particular character. I am pretty sure Batman’s popularity also stems from the fact that DC hired great creators to create different non-continuity-loaded takes on the character. And while not every one of them can be a creative or commercial success, no better "classic library" has been built for any character. It’s those perennial sellers which in turn manage to introduce new people to the character all the time. And they can still jump on the "ongoing series" when they feel ready for the commitment. We have 8 Batman collections chart in the Top300, and that’s not counting any Omnis (another 7!).
Marvel not only lacks those kind of books, but but the few they have, like for example the fantastic graphic novels Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale have created for Daredevil, the Hulk, Spider-Man and Captain America, they do not keep in print. And while there's an upcoming Gallery Edition of Spider-Man Blue a monster-sized Hardcover is not exactly the ideal format for the casual buyer. Actually the only non-Omni/Epic collection Spider-Man charts in the Top300 is Life Story by Chip Zdarsky (105). It's one vs. eight. Staggering.
On 31 we finally have the first Non-Big-Two book. And I guess nobody's surprised to see Something is Killing the Children taking that spot. Though the sales on the TPs have considerably slowed down, we consistently sell a few copies of the hardcover or the slipcase every month.
Not far behind on 33 is the next indie book, namely the first Volume of the The Boys Hardcover Omnibus. On the one hand the hype for the TV show was immense, on the other one the series already went through so many editions, in soft- and hardcover, and I feel the Omnis did not quite had the maximum impact. Maybe the material also doesn't necessarily scream for (another) oversized edition? I am joking, of course! EVERYTHING is better in oversized hardcovers!
34 features the first non-Gotham-related DC Book: The Death and Return of Superman Omnibus in its newest printing, another 150$-price tag from DC. But people bought it nonetheless. Same with the recent oversized HC, it just sells. It might not be the best Superman story, but it is by far the most successful one. The “best one”, of course a very subjective matter, still charts on 228 (Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow by Alan Moore).
The dying Superman shares the rank with Spider-Man 2099 V1, an omnibus subsequently raised by Marvel to the ever-popular $150 level. It's a respectable spot for a book not woven in Marvel main continuity (well, with the whole Spider-Verse this is only half-true), but even Omar's love for the character and the buzz around Spider-verse could't catapult it into higher spheres. V2 was already announced, though, so all good. This also marks the first entry by Peter David in our bestseller list. And there are MANY more to come!
The Immortal Hulk. One of Marvel's most lauded runs in the past decade, if not THE most lauded one. An epic told in 50+ chapters, with thoroughly impressive art by Joe Bennett. This has OMNIBUS TREATMENT written all over it. So why "only" rank 39? Well, a lot of people order when the FOC approaches, which is still a few days away. And with the additional orders we got in the first two weeks of '23 alone this one would be very close to the Top20. And yes, again: 150$ cover price AND a modern run. Not an easy sell.

Miles Morales V1 (42) shares the rank with Uncanny X-Men V3, a second (if not third) printing. Same as with the ASM Omnis, all UXMs, which were available, have sold very well, even last copies at cover or above cover price. People know reprints will come someday, but they want it now. Those big books are now Marvel’s perennial sellers and I assume they must be very happy at this price point. And for potential new customers they started the cheaper, almost Tankobon-sized Mighty Masterworks line (Amazing V1 on 267). They sell decent numbers, but mostly to the same people who already have the material in multiple editions. In the brick&mortar the 60s art is an instant turnoff for newcomers. Sad but true!
TMNT The Last Ronin is a massive hit for IDW (42). And I can’t remember since I started reading comics in the early 90s that TMNT comics have been more popular than now. The Hardcover Compendium (basically an Omni) didn’t sell crazy numbers, but still very well for a 150$ book (for 832 pages!). And as with many others we could have probably sold more if they wouldn’t have been out of stock for a certain period. Unfortunately it takes ca 4 weeks to get big books restocked from PRH (ca two weeks for trades) and 2-3 from Diamond. We’re working on faster transportation, but we have to priotize cost-effectiveness and stock-safety over speed.
Abrams Comicarts charts twice in the Top300: Fantastic Four Full Circle by Alex Ross is at 45, while the first Volume of the Simpsons Halloween comics comes in at 177. Both books are beautifully produced and retail at very reasonable prices. Looking forward to more releases by them.
The oversized hardcover of Deadly Class V3 charts at 47, which officially makes it our best selling Image book of 2022. The demand for the Image “Big Books” has picked up immensely compared to last year. It took them a while to expand the program, and I wonder why, since Brubaker’s books have always done very well. Speaking of which, his Captain America run (resp. the first volumes of it, both reprints from 2021) keeps selling like hot cakes and comes in at 49, resp. 61. Breaking up a longer run in multiple, slimmer volumes seems to make a lot of sense commercially and I hope Marvel takes notice. We are definitely a Brubaker store, our store had a nice shelf just for his and Master Phillips books for about half a year, but his books sell very well online as well. Everyone loves the stuff. Except for Reckless. Only one volume makes the Top300, coming in at -ehem- 300. I can’t tell if it’s the format or that people don’t come back for more? It mostly sells in bulks of multiple volumes. Anyway, once the Kill or be Killed HC (68) is back in print it will surely make up for the rather lacklustre Reckless years.
At 70 we have the first Manga entry, unsurprisingly a Berserk Volume. We could have probably sold at least 30%, if not 50% more of the latest hardcover volume but we underestimated demand and, like always with Berserk, the book went OOP shortly after release. Dark Horse does a very good job of keeping them reprints coming, and in a few weeks we’ll have it back in stock. Needless to say, all volumes of Berserk chart in the Top300. Berserk shares rank 70 with the highest ranking Epic Collection of 2022: Daredevil Volume 12: It comes with Claws, which is now also our all-time best-selling Epic! Both Ann Nocenti Daredevil Epics also chart in the Top200 (149 and 177) and it’s getting ridiculous that Marvel still hasn’t announced a Nocenti Omnibus, yet. Don’t you want to print money, Marvel?! In my humble opinion a fantastic, criminally underrated run. A third book is also charting at 70, and it’s the first Sandman entry. It’s the second Volume of the Deluxe editions, which seems pretty random. Except for the fact that both first Volume of the Omni AND the first Volume of the Deluxes (all 5 chart in the 300) were not in print most of the year. Maybe they didn’t think that a Netflix show helmed by Neil Gaiman himself could possibly move some books…? Anyways, we did sell quite a few of the thick TPs in the brick&mortar (Vol 1 comes in at 201) and tons of Absolutes (4 out of five chart in the 300). In total 13 different Sandman titles charted and it was a great year for Vertigo's (now DC Black Label, meh) flagship.
Only in the 90th place we have the first Conan book, namely Original Marvel Years Vol. 10. All new volumes move OK, but activity on the older ones has cooled off. Marvel seems to have had the right instinct: Get as much out quickly as possible and then hand over the license again when interest wanes. I am curious how Titan will fare with their Conan books. Also on the 90th we have the first single issue to enter the chart: Maximally unsurprising that it's Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez' Batman #125. We do love the single issue format, but this chart makes it pretty obvious why are our priorities are and will stay with other formats. While floppies will never go away, their importance for the industry will decrease. Every retailer interview I encounter deals with this topic. We are happy to have singles as an add-on, but not being dependent on the sales. But them variant cover are just so pretteeeeyyyyyyy!
The Ice Cream Man Sundae Edition HC Vol 01 on 98 is another hit from Image Comics. We have also sold a bunch of TPs, but our audience loves the hardcover format, and this was one of those crossover books that all kinds of readers bought both in-store and online. There might have been a lot of Omnis, which had weaker pre-order numbers than the Fantastic Four By Millar & Hitch Omnibus (101) (Hi there, Squirrel Girl! Hello, Captain America by Nehisi-Coates and a few others who didn't even make the Top300). But there was a time, when those creator names practically guaranteed success, hence their mention in the title. Well, it seems those days are long over, since the book didn't even make the Top100. Which is a pity, because I remember this run to be pretty fun and, obviously, very easy on the eye. Maybe it will sell better on release.
I will close this commentary with rank 118, which features the best-charting original graphic novel: Bowie Stardust Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams by Michael Allred. It's a really nice looking book, as you'd expect from Allred, and it was by far our bestseller in-store. Most of the people probably bought it because they were Bowie-fans (we're in Berlin after all!) but I want to believe it's also Allred's art and striking cover which made them pick it up and browse through it in the first place.
OK. That's enough. Of course there is much more to say. And maybe I will. But for now I hope you enjoyed this.
