Alright. I’m gonna start this off with the most obvious pun I could do for Zatanna: Bring Down The House #1. But this comes closest to describe the impact. So:
Javier Rodriguez’s artwork is pure magic!
My previous relationship with Zatanna was actually rather mediocre. For me, she was always more of a side character in the DC Universe.
She was just part of some of the series that were in my rotation.
Not an uninteresting character, but nothing that particularly grabbed my absolute attention.
She was just this backwards-talking, mid-twenties magician who brought a certain sexiness to the classic male audience through her burlesque outfit, this slight awkwardness and clumsiness, paired with an Italian or Hispanic look.
Looks like Mariko Tamaki and Javier Rodriguez are going to change that. Sure, the sexiness remains, it’s part of the character and Rodriguez doesn’t forget to use this element.
The same applies to clumsiness, awkwardness and all the other things that make her a pretty anti-heroine.
But Tamaki manages, quite unnoticed (not to say magically), to instill deep compassion for Zatanna in me.
You just like her, this seemingly strong and self-confident woman who is, however, deeply moved and insecure inside. Who has never been able to get the past out of her. And it is precisely this past that now comes out in full force.
And this is, after a relatively relaxed opening with a few flashes of promising excitement, where the supernatural and magic finally come into play.
So everything has been done right at story level.
However, what ultimately makes me absolutely thrilled and let me put this 5-part series into my pullbox while I was still reading it are Javier Rodriguez’s incredibly creative, lively, colorful, playful, humorous and artistic illustrations.
I’m looking very much forward to this series and getting more Zatanna.
