Introducing: Wondrous Comics
Wondrous - Definition, Meaning & Synonyms Vocabulary.com › dictionary › wondrous adjective. extraordinarily good or great ; used especially as intensifiers. synonyms: fantastic, grand, howling, incredible, marvellous (ehem!), …
In short terms: We want to create something special, with you. And here are the next steps.
1st Appearance
To celebrate our third year of existence, we will launch an awesome comic magazine, which features comics from you, our customers.
The magazine will have a page count of ca 36-54 pages and a print run of ca 1000 copies. For one month (Sep or Oct) it will be added for free to every order shipped from Walt’s. After that, it will be sold in our online store and, of course, wherever the creators want to sell their share of copies.
Please understand us correctly: we do not want to produce some throwaway-freebie. No, we want to discover the next European super talents. And expose them to 1000 new readers (and potential future backers) right away. Maybe this very first magazine will even become a collectible at some point, who knows?!
Yup, we dream big. And so should you!
Continuity
We will bring our A-game from comics retailing to comics publishing. We are an army marching in your service (OK, that’s pretty martial, but you know what I mean!). We have the funds, the communication channels, the marketing ideas, the passion for the medium. We want to offer fair contracts and participation for creators. And a few steps later, we also want to be the first indie publisher from Europe, who dares to enter US/international publishing (we’ll just ignore Humanoids for a second, OK?). It’s simple: Walt’s Comics imports the US comic books to Europe, Wondrous Comics exports the European comic books to the US!
Because 2 x WC is better than 1 x WC, as every family with two separate bathrooms will confirm.
Anyway… To begin with, we want to focus on a handful of talents and work with them on elevating their ideas to the next level. Be it crowdfunding or direct market distribution, we’re getting the projects ready. If your dream was to be solicited in the Previews catalog… well, we’ll have to see about that. A few others distributors have also popped up recently ;) But this is definitely our goal. Not immediately, but as soon as possible.
Call to adventure
I know for a fact that we have quite a few very talented creators in our customer base. Some even have a publishing history, others are just starting out. What we’re looking for: an unique style and professionalism. We ask for your everything in order to see a project through. Everything else will hopefully be on your pages. You will immediately captivate us, or not. What we can promise already now: ALL submissions will not only receive feedback, but will also be featured on our social media channels including mention.
- We are not set for any genre, as long as it is interesting ;) Especially for the magazine, it will be the final compilation of stories that will set the overall theme
- The final product will have the standard US format (16.84 x 26.01 cm), so keeping the ratio is the one thing that is not negotiable
- The length of your story should be something between 4-10 pages.
- Don’t try to squeeze in a maximum of words/content. A visually appealing silent comic is just as good, probably even better.
- Your story idea and characters are 100% yours and yours alone and, secondly: they have never been published before and in any form (not even online/digital).
- If your comic is in another language than English, please submit an accompanying sheet with a translation.
- Your story can be a complete piece or a teaser. If it’s the latter, it should still read as a fulfilling chunk of story.
- The pages will do the talking. But if you feel like wanting to add some context about you as a creator or the plans for your creation, feel free to do so. But it will be the actual sequential storytelling, which will sell the project.
Timing
Submission starts now and will be active till August 28. If you need more time, submit a few (completed!) pages and ask for an extension. However, that is time that will be missed in any correction loops, because:
The final data files have to be submitted by September 21.
The comic will be produced in September and distributed at the end of September/early October.
FAQ
Do I get paid for my pages?
Not for the magazine presentation. If we decide to take the project further (crowdfunding, direct publishing etc): of course.
What if I “only” self published my story, does it still count as published?
Yes. If you sold 1 x copy of your comic, we consider it published.
I am not a customer of Walt’s, can I still submit?
Yes. But there is a reason we announce this call in the Walt’s newsletter first ;)
I have something, but it is much longer than 10 pages. Can I still submit?
Yes. We will decide if there is an excerpt that is suitable as a teaser, or if we are generally interested in a publication, we will contact you.
