Like probably many other DC subscribers, I've been debating with myself (a very frequent habit of mine) whether to read Knight Terrors, or to use the opportunity while the regular runs are being paused and take a break from my favorites to save money (or spend it elsewhere).
But since I sit at the source and also at the pre-orders, I am, of course, always a victim of my own curiosity (gift and curse), coupled with the pull of good stories and the magic of some of the best marketers in the publishing business.
So I agreed with myself to at least read the Knight Terror issues of my favorites. Which probably means I actually spend more and have to read more now, but I'll discuss that with my therapist.
Speaking of therapist, that brings us (or at least scratches) to the subject of the whole thing. Our superheroes will have to face their deepest fears and thus worst nightmares in each of the future Knight Terrors issues. And this, Knight Terrors: First Blood, is where it all starts (technically the FCBD but we're not nitpickers, are we?).
While the issue starts with some confusion and a character that was not on my radar so far, Dr. Destiny, the following dive into the story runs very smoothly thanks to Deadman as a companion. Who will later guide us through the Knight Terrors main-line issues as well.
The fact that Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman enter the stage together right from the start should be warning enough for us that the Knight Terrors won't be a child's play. Probably rather tricycle-riding children in the hotel corridor.
I had similar teething problems with with Howard Porter's drawings. Had a hard time getting used to it for the first few pages, but with the graveyard scene and Deadman's appearance, I warmed up to the sometimes volatile, rough style, but it reveals its details after the first dip. And is actually just a fitting style for a dream-based adventure. Brad Anderson's subliminally glowing and luminous coloring adds perfectly to the surreal mood.
Good intro, let's see where Insomnia will take us.
