They had me at Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. I didn't even know what their new project was about before I read it just now.
And it looks as if this writer-artist dream team will once again deliver another great piece of comic. Masterpiece #1 was certainly a great start.
Thanks to Maleev's as always excellent artwork and Bendis' story, which doesn't beat around the bush, gets straight to the main plot and doesn't give you much time to catch your breath until you're done, you're hooked and zoomed out from the first panel to the last bubble.
It starts somewhat misleadingly (which is probably part of Bendis' concept, because every time you think you know where it's going and what who's doing, there's the twist and we're back to being clueless and spellbound as before) with Emma - a 16-year-old orphaned genius, as we will learn later - and her first day at the new school.
It will also be her last day, because the "FBI" comes by and takes her to a mysterious, obviously very influential millionaire. Who tells her that her real name is Masterpiece and that she is the child of two criminal masterminds who not only robbed him of a lot of money in their coup, but also left him with an unbridled rage and desire for revenge.
She is now to become part of this revenge plan.
When she returns to Gleason, presumably her legal guardian...
Ah, forget it, I won't be able to summarize briefly everything that goes on here on so little paper. And that is precisely the main reason why, after reading Masterpiece, I have an irrepressible urge to know what happens next.
There's sure to be a lot more excitement, definitely at least one more brilliant heist, certainly more mysterious characters and astonishing reveals, and definitely more of this unique storytelling by Bendis and these fantastic illustrations by Maleev.
All the potential is here to make this one epic.
