The art of entertainment?

The entertainment of art?

Yes, exactly, Precious Metal #1, the opening sequence to the descendant of Little Bird is both.

One thing up front, Little Bird may be chiseled in and traced with a sharpie at the top of my reading list, but I’ve actually plunged virginally into Darcy van Poelgeest and Ian Bertram’s world from which Precious Metal has peeled itself.
That’s why my enthusiasm is completely new and unbiased.

So, how was it?

I’d rather ask what was it (like)?

Even if it’s actually total nonsense, because it’s impossible to draw comparisons with such a unique piece, it always helps to open a few drawers and name them so that non-readers can get an idea, so that you can somehow convey my reading experience.

Therefore...

Precious Metal #1 staggers somewhere between Blade Runner - the movie, of course - and other dystopian action thrillers of the late 80s/early 90s, Hard Boiled - On the one hand, in terms of the visuals, the comic masterpiece by Darrow and Miller, on the other hand, in terms of the writing, the crime genre from which you can fish your own examples, and, what often crossed my mind, surrealist paintings like those created by Dalí, Frida Kahlo or Davegore.

As you can see, it’s not easy for me to put into words the impression van Poelgeest and Bertram’s comic made on me. But perhaps it is not necessary to always name and describe everything so specifically.

Precious Metal #1 is visually stunning. What Bertram, and not least colorist Matt Hollingsworth and lettering mastermind Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, have conjured up on the canvas here offers hours of entertainment and should be enough to convince anyone that comics are art.

The story moves on the same level between atmospherical catchiness and complexity, and holds you captive from the first to the last panel. Even if you don’t always understand everything, you believe that the flow of reading alone will provide the explanations.

Well, I guess, you get the gist, I’m impressed.
