Ever since the first Amazing Spider-Man Disney100 variant, hopes were high and we all somehow realized that a MarvelxWalt Disney crossover wouldn't be too long in coming.
It may have taken a bit more waiting than expected, but now the much-anticipated issue, Jason Aaron's one-shot Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime, is in.
And what can I say, it was a good decision to put Jason Aaron at the helm and it was a good decision for Aaron to take on Scrooge McDuck.
Perhaps Donald Duck would have been the most obvious choice, but by Marvel standards a character like Uncle Scrooge offers much more potential and, above all, complexity, not to say multiplicity.
After all, he is not just the richest, but also the baddest motherfucker in Duckburg. Just like almost every Marvel hero, he also thrives on the ambivalence and inner conflict that defines them, the inner struggle between good and evil, between asshole and good Samaritan, egoist and family man.
And so the conclusion of this marvelous homage to Uncle Scrooge is that he may be a little bitter, and certainly the baddest motherfucker in Duckburg, but certainly not the most careless.
Because - and here again the connecting element to our superhero stories - the most important thing is not material wealth, but social wealth, the family.
I'm sure enough people have already given their detailed opinions on the content, background and implementation, so I'll just give a very brief summary of the quality of this issue.
Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime is a very true, very homely and very lovely declaration of love to Scrooge McDuck, cleverly spun with Aaron taking on the first appearance of the Scottish uncle (Christmas on Bear Mountain), mixing in a bit of Marvel multiverse action and keeping to the Duck Tales puns and humor. Also very clever how he is literally reflecting all facets of this multi-layered, often contradictory character through multiversal versions.
The large cast of artists, who all give their best and paint their own love letters to the foundation of the modern American pop comic, rounds off the whole thing and makes for a wonderful, entertaining piece of tribute.
