I liked it. Ultimates #1 is a very entertaining layer cake that brings a lot of world without being too much to comprehend.
One thing first, for those wondering, you don’t need any prior knowledge of either the old Ultimates or what’s been going on in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe in the recent past.
The short summary at the beginning and the narrative flow in the middle are enough to understand where we are and what it’s all about.
Deniz Camp succeeds in layering and delivering a complex story in such a way that the reader is immediately sucked into this Ultimate Universe and experiences how the superheroes take back their world.
It does start off with a bit (too much for my taste, though I'm certain some of you will love it) of multiverse theory and shop talk between Tony Stark and - yes, actually, this Doom, is a broken - Reed Richards. But Camp is very skilled writer of dialogues and his easy-flowing, humor-soaked style truly is a lot of fun, without sacrificing intellectual appeal.
In combination with Juan Frigeri’s lively, dynamic artwork (colored by Federico Blee), this prelude to the new Ultimates is highly addictive.
Very well done, indeed.
I liked it.
And I’m looking very much forward to the continuation.
