Do you know how hard it is to work at a comic shop and not leave the place with your bag full of comics? I set myself a challenge: go to work and leave without a new comic, manga, graphic novel, or even an omnibus (because even that has happened once). I failed miserably.
I took Batman - Justice Busters just to read it and write a review and bring it back. But I feel like I won't be able to, because it is that good!
I'm sure there is some version of DC Superheroes as Simpsons or in Phineas and Ferb, but it did not cross my mind that Batman could be a manga!
Opening it for the first time gave me 90's Ghost in the Shell vibes. The story has retro vibes and yet is very much futuristic. It's a manga, but it's a Batman story! I don't know how I could explain it further!
There are six chapters and six "missions," all following a much bigger story. Bruce has been Batman for three years, but lately, Gotham is getting immeasurably out of control.
Batman encounters Superman, The Joker, The Riddler, The Penguin, and even more household names. Some as friends, some as enemies, and some as... not really friends, not really enemies, but one could say acquaintances with a weird, ambiguous relationship?
You'll also meet a new version of Robin. Maybe one of the best in terms of crime-fighting? (I'd actually really like to know your opinion on that, so don't be shy and leave a comment).
You want to know why Batman would need the Justice Buster suit? Do we even see it? That's a legitimate question, after all, "Justice Buster" is in the title. The answer might probably be a shock-
Yeah, no, I will never, ever, spoil anything! Where would justice be in that?
What I can tell you is that it is action-packed. The usual black and white scheme that is used in Mangas gave it a dark undertone, which was very suitable for this kind of story.
Now you know if I'm desperate for more when I look for a second and third volume. I mean it did come out in 2021, and there is no volume 2 - yet. Luckily, I heard a rumor that Volume 2 is supposed to drop sometime in February 2024 (YAY!). So keep an eye out for this one.
Batman - Justice Busters is written and drawn by the duo Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi, who already have a successful manga series with Ultraman. It is published by Kodansha in English and supervised by DC Comics.
In all seriousness, this one is for Otakus and Batman fan-people! And in all seriousness again, I'm not one of those, and I loved it. So maybe it's for everyone?
