The Invincible Iron Man is probably the most Marvelian series that can actually consistently excite me. In my well-filling pullbox, there are currently really only two Marvel ongoings that manage to do that.
Anyone who reads my output carefully (and I assume you all do) will know that Marvel titles often have a hard time getting me excited.
Apart from the fact that it is already a rarity that writer and artist manage to keep the high level over the whole length of an ongoing series, often, the depicted worlds of the Marvel Universe are too complex and simply require too much background knowledge, which you then have to get on top of again and again.
By the way, this is one of the reasons why you will probably only rarely find any X-Men titles in my reviews. I just never bothered with them and I'm certainly not going to start now.
So I'm especially surprised that my enthusiasm for this series doesn't weaken a bit with The Invincible Iron Man #11. On the contrary, it actually awakens in me precisely this rare hunger for more when the issue is over, which only rarely occurs, and then mostly only with mini-series.
Gerry Duggan, however, manages to keep me hooked through his compelling storytelling, very insightful, in-depth character design, a pleasantly quiet, subtle, but no less funny humor, and gripping action.
Also, with crossovers and cameo appearances of our favorite Marvel heroes, Duggan makes sure that not only we, but also the artists at his side always get great stuff to draw.
It must also be said that Duggan is really lucky with these very artists at his side. For guest artist Andrea di Vito also delights us with some stunning artwork in this issue.
And so even a honeymoon with Emma Frost and a visit to Krakoa can provide supreme and addictive entertainment for an X-Men ignoramus like me.
