Well, I never imagined that I would read a Hack/Slash comic. And especially not to find it superb.
I have always avoided the Hack/Slash franchise. For obvious slasher and splatter horror reasons.
A little bit of creepiness, okay. If the story is good, maybe a little more horror. But bloodbaths, excessive violence and serial killers, ugh, nope.
But then came Hack/Slash: Back To School. And it had Zoe Thorogood written on it in big block letters. Story and artwork.
So of course I at least had to try it once.
After page two, all my trigger senses howled and I felt the impulse to flip the issue shut again. But curious and brave as I am, I continued.
And already on page four I was hopelessly caught in the Thorogood maelstrom.
She just can do it. Brilliant character design, with that inimitable and irresistible mix of seriousness and dramedy, coupled with subtle yet hilarious humor, and topped with a certain cordial fuck-it attitude.
Her Cassie is instantly endearing. On the one hand, you want to take care of that lost little girl, but on the other hand, you know, just stay away, this girl's trouble, the bad kind.
But the pinch that made me click directly on "Subscribe" was the Slasher Hunter Academy storyline.
Because it promises exactly this mix of emotive teenage drama, smart humor, and ultra-violence, which might make a really wide audience happy, while bringing together fans of very different genres.
Oh, yes, of course, Thorogood's artwork is inimitably brilliant as always.
Hack/Slash: Back To School #1 was a surprising, fantastic, surprisingly-fantastic first issue.
I am very much looking forward to the follow-up.
