From the series "Crossovers I Always Knew I Needed". Of course, I was totally hyped when Marvel announced the Weapons of Vengeance, two of my favorite heroes doin' their thangs side by side.
When Benjamin Percy was announced as a puppeteer, it was clear, this is gonna be awesome (yes, fanboy).
Again, with Ghost Rider/Wolverine Weapons of Vengeance Alpha, I felt the same way I did with each of the 16 Percy Ghost Riders so far, I was absolutely spellbound.
The story is tight, in the best 90s horror (associations to the Vertigo years flicker through my synapses here as well), Johnnie and Wolvie habitually cool, taciturn and focused, and the common foe provides the perfect blend of tragedy and dread for which I appreciate Percy so much.
At the same time, he builds us a backstory for Johnny Blaze and also Wolverine that fits quite wonderfully into the previous canon.
But the story alone was not the reason for my spellboundness. Geoff Shaw's artwork, skillfully colored by Rain Beredo, is sheer stunning. Very detailed, a very fine mix of horror comic (which is also reminiscent of the late 90s) and noir, with fantastic action spreads that keep alternating with the dark, quietly creepy scenes.
Definitely a comic that you should pick up several times, because Shaw gives us many little nuances that you only notice when you give it time and attention.
Despite all the rage and fire, "Sympathy for the Devil" is a very cool intro, that leaves not just a lasting impression on me, but also stokes the fever for more.
