Another comic that reminded me that I wanted to catch up a bit. Like John Constantine: Hellblazer, for example.
With Dead in America issue #1, Simon Spurrier and Aaron Campbell continue their John Constantine: Hellblazer series and, as the title suggests, Constantine, along with his friend Nat and son Noah make their exodus to the States.
And on the first few pages I constantly ask myself whether I shouldn’t put the issue aside and devote myself to the two trades Marks of Woe and The Best Version of You first.
Yet I can’t resist the irresistible pull of a Hellblazer story and Aaron Campbell’s brilliant artwork, and just keep reading.
The introduction is well equipped with hints and somewhat more detailed explanations for the current status of undead Constantine, but at the same time with a lot of references that I don’t quite understand yet. But this can easily be overcome by enjoying Campbell’s darkly detailed and vastly creative eye-candy illustrations.
So it works quite well to simply continue reading, just soak it up, enjoy the filth and magic, and leave the processing and making of connections to the Sandman Universe experienced mind.
A tactic that has proven its worth with many an issue and volume from the Sandman series and its spin-offs. Even if not everything makes sense straight away, if you just walk through the field long enough and pick a plant here and there, you’ll end up with a somberly nice bouquet.
It’s still too early for me to draw a conclusion, I’m still getting my bearings. But I believe that John Constantine’s trip to America can become very, very great.
